Heuer, Bats Propel Scots to Wins at Brevard

BREVARD, N.C. -- Jackson Heuer tossed eight innings in game one and the Covenant baseball team scored 27 runs over two games in a doubleheader sweep of Brevard on Monday afternoon at Gil Coan Field. Covenant took game one, 8-2, before completing the sweep with a 19-9 victory in the finale.

Covenant improves to 14-19 on the year and 7-13 in USA South play. Brevard is now 7-25 and 2-21.

GAME ONE: Covenant 8, Brevard 2

Heuer threw eight strong innings and Brooks DuBose's grand slam capped a five-run fifth inning as Covenant game one of Monday's doubleheader at Brevard, 8-2.

Heuer tossed a career-high eight innings to collect his fourth win of the year. Heuer (4-2) scattered nine hits and surrendered two runs, while striking out four. The right-hander threw 114 pitches, with 82 of those for strikes, as he did not walk a batter. Heuer retired 11 batters in a row at one point in the middle innings.

Covenant struck early as the first three Scots reached in the first inning and Alex Gonzalez drove in two with a single to make it 2-0. 

The Scots were held off the board until the fifth when Covenant scored five runs to take a 7-0 lead. Covenant loaded the bases with two outs and John Mitchell was hit by a pitch to bring home Donny Lewis. DuBose followed with a grand slam to left-center field to give the Scots a commanding, 7-0, lead. 

The homer was DuBose's third of the year. 

Brevard got two runs off Heuer in the sixth, but Covenant added an insurance in the seventh when Lewis Saunders connected on a solo homer. Saunders' home run was his second of the year.

Heuer had little trouble in the eighth before handing the ball off to Harrison Richards, who tossed a scoreless ninth to secure the win.

Gonzalez finished 2-for-5 with two RBIs and Saunders was 2-for-2 after coming on as a pinch-hitter. Covenant out-hit Brevard, 11-9.

Brevard starter Ben Melton (1-5) went 4.2 innings allowing two earned runs on six hits. Brae Wooten, Ryan Roon, and Johnny Flynn had two hits apiece.

GAME TWO: Covenant 19, Brevard 9

Covenant scored a season-high 19 runs and tallied 19 hits to complete the twin-bill sweep with a 19-9 victory.

Mitchell went 4-for-6 with three RBIs to lead the 19-hit attack for the Scots, while Jonah Carignan was 3-for-6 with four RBIs and Tommy Easley had three hits, all doubles, in four at-bats.

Matt Reitz was the beneficiary of the offensive explosion as he went five innings to pick up the win. Reitz (3-5) allowed 10 hits, but gave up just two earned runs while striking out four. Ben Walsh tossed the final four innings to collect his first save of the year. Walsh allowed two hits and one run.

Covenant scored three runs in the first, two in the second, and three in the third to take an 8-4 lead. CJ Edmond had a two-run triple in the first and Carignan followed with an RBI single. Mitchell and Gonzalez had RBIs in the two-run second, while Carignan, DuBose and Easley added RBIs in the third.

The Scots blew the game open with a nine-run sixth inning. Covenant had seven hits in the frame, including Carignan's two-run double and Mitchell's two-run single that gave the Scots a 17-9 lead.

Gonzalez and Saunders had two hits apiece as every Covenant starter had at least one hit. Gonzalez had three RBIs, while Saunders, Edmond, and DuBose had two each.

Matthew Scavotto (1-5) got the loss for Brevard in relief. JJ Wilkes went 4-for-4 with two RBIs to lead the Tornados.


Covenant will host Berry in a non-conference game on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
