LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Despite homers from C.J. Edmond, Tyler Moore, and John Mitchell, the Covenant baseball team dropped a high-scoring game against Berea, 23-16, in USA South action on Friday afternoon.

Covenant falls to 8-8 on the season and 3-3 in the USA South after the loss.

Mitchell tied Covenant's single-game program record with six RBIs. The senior was 4-for-6 from the plate, adding a triple and two singles to his homer.

It was an offensive-heavy game for both teams, with runs scored by at least one team in seven of the nine innings.

Edmond's home run, his second of the year, came in the first inning, a long ball over the center field fence that also plated Moore. The homer was Edmond's second of the year.

Berea (6-10, 2-5 USA South) jumped out to a 5-2 lead after the first two innings and would go on to score three more runs in the top of the third to take an 8-2 lead.

The Scots responded with their biggest scoring inning of the game in the bottom of the third and put up five runs. Brett Kernodle got the bats going for the Scots on a single to right field. On the next at-bat Moore drove it out of the park to bring in Kernodle and make it 8-4. The home run for Moore was his first of the year.

Later in the third, Mitchell brought in two more runs on a triple to center, to bring Covenant within two (8-6). Mitchell came home on a Tommy Easley ground-out to slice the deficit to 8-7.

Covenant scored two more runs in the bottom of the fifth, but still trailed 12-9. The sixth inning saw four and three runs from Berea and Covenant, respectively, making it 16-12.

Berea got the bats going again in the eighth inning, coming up with another seven runs to put the game out of reach.

A two-run homer by Mitchell rallied the Scots in the eighth, but the inning's four runs weren't enough to draw the Scots any closer. The homer for Mitchell was his second of the season.

Moore drove in four runs, while Edmond and Christian had two apiece. Moore went 3-for-5 and Edmond went 4-for-5 on the day. Alex Gonzalez had two hits, one of which was a double. The Scots used nine pitchers in the contest. Matt Reitz (2-2) made the start and was credited with the loss.

Aaron Duncan (1-1) came in as a reliever to get the win for Berea. T.C. Eads went 4-for-5 with four RBIs and Nicholas Bottom wen 3-for-4 with four RBIs. Ty Williams scored five runs for the visitors.

The Scots will complete the final two games of the series against Berea on Saturday. The first game is set to start at 12 p.m.
