ATLANTA, Ga. -- The Covenant baseball team opened the 2019 season with a 5-0 loss at Oglethorpe on Friday evening at Anderson Field.

The game was the first of a three-game series between Covenant (0-1) and Oglethorpe (1-0). The final two games are set for Saturday on Lookout Mountain starting at noon. Both games are scheduled for seven innings.

Oglethorpe scored two runs in the first and another in the second and used a strong start from Jonathan Haab to quiet the Scots' bats. Covenant had four hits on the day as Tyler Moore, CJ Edmond, Alex Gonzalez, and Tommy Easley all had singles. The hit for Easley was the first of his collegiate career.

Covenant opened the game by getting runners at the corners with one out after Moore and Edmond singled. The Scots were on the unfortunate side when a liner off the bat of Gonzalez found the glove of Oglethorpe second baseman Billy Finch, who quickly threw to first to complete a double play and end the Covenant threat.

The host Stormy Petrels scored twice in the first to grab a 2-0 lead. Jacob Gassert and Alec Babb each had RBI singles to plate two runs. In the second, it was a balk that brought home Oglethorpe's third run.

Covenant starter Matt Reitz settled down from there and tossed four straight scoreless innings. Reitz (0-1) picked up the loss, but went seven innings and scattered six hits with five earned runs while striking out six. Adam Carver came on in relief and threw a perfect eighth inning.

Haab (1-0) went six innings for Oglethorpe and notched the win. The right-hander struck out nine and walked two. Shota Barbeau and Christopher Keane combined for the final three innings to seal the win.

Oglethorpe had just six hits in the contest. Andrew Mink finished 1-for-4 with two RBIs.

Covenant and Oglethorpe complete their three-game set on Saturday on Lookout Mountain. Game one is set for 12 p.m.
