LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- An up and down year greeted the Covenant baseball team in 2018. The Scots picked up wins over regional and conference powers early in the year, but struggled through the middle portion of the season.
Covenant finished with a 13-25 overall record and 7-11 in the USA South.
Early in the year, Covenant split a doubleheader with regional power Emory and then took two-of-three from reigning, and eventual, USA South champion LaGrange. Late in the year, that spark returned as the Scots defeated regional foes Berry and Birmingham Southern in back-to-back games.
Seniors Joel Johnson and Caleb Bloye capped their careers with strong senior seasons. Johnson set a single-season program record with seven triples and earned All-USA South honorable mention, while Bloye wrapped up his career with 199 career hits (third-most in program history).
SERIES OF THE YEAR:
At home over the last two seasons Covenant has knocked off some of the top competition in the region and in late February the Scots were at it again. Two weeks after taking a splitting a doubleheader with perennial regional power Emory at home, the Scots would open USA South play with a series victory over No. 10-ranked LaGrange.
The series got off to a bumpy start as Covenant dropped the opener, 13-5, but the hosts soon rebounded and took the early season conference series. In an 8-6, game two victory, CJ Edmond was 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs to help the Scots rally back from a 5-3 deficit for the win. Tyler Moore and Caleb Bloye also had two hits apiece in the victory, while the bullpen strength of Adam Carver (win) and Andrew Cline (save) aided in the victory.
In the series finale, Covenant hit three home runs (Bloye, Jonah Carignan, and Christian Murray) to take the series with a 10-4 victory. The Scots had six extra-base hits on the day as a team and had 16 total hits. Tristen Green threw four innings and allowed one run in his start before Taylor Bloye came on to earn the win after going 3.2 innings.
It was the second straight time that Covenant won a series over LaGrange at home (2016). LaGrange would go on to win the USA South Tournament and advanced deep into the NCAA South Regional.
