Baseball Defeats Birmingham Southern, 7-6

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- CJ Edmond went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs and the Covenant baseball team defeated Birmingham Southern, 7-6, on Tuesday afternoon on Lookout Mountain.

The win for Covenant (13-22) snapped an eight-game losing streak to Birmingham Southern. The Scots had not beaten the Panthers since 2011, the first meeting between the programs.

Edmond, named to the All-USA South honorable mention team last week, hit a two-run homer in the first inning to give the Scots a 3-1 lead. He then added a two-run single in the fifth inning that tied the game at 6-6. The sophomore also scored two runs.

Birmingham Southern (21-15) scored first in the top of the first inning, but Covenant answered with three in its half of the frame. John Mitchell led off with a single and was driven home on a Caleb Bloye RBI double to tie the score at 1-1. Edmond then hit his fourth homer of the year, a two-run shot to left field, giving the Scots a two-run lead.

Covenant added a run in the third on a Devin Cerrato RBI single that plated Bloye to go ahead 4-1.

Birmingham Southern responded with a run in the fourth and then four in the fifth to grab a 6-4 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth, the first three hitters reached based capped by Edmond's two-run single to right field that brought home both Bloye and Mitchell to knot the score at 6-6. With two outs and a runner at second, Brooks DuBose delivered a go-ahead, RBI single to left field that scored Edmond to give the Scots a 7-6 lead. The hit was DuBose's first as a Scot.

The Covenant bullpen would hold the lead the rest of the way. Jackson Heuer (1-0) got the win as he tossed two innings, including a scoreless sixth inning. Conor Auson followed with two scoreless innings and three strikeouts, while Matt Reitz collected his second save of the year in the ninth inning.

The top three hitters in the Covenant lineup -- Mitchell, Caleb Bloye, Edmond -- combined to go 7-for-11 with five RBIs and seven runs scored. Mitchell was 1-for-3 with two runs, Bloye went 3-for-4 with three runs and an RBI. Bloye has now tallied 193 career hits. Trevor Grapenthin also had a hit for Covenant, which out-hit the visiting Panthers 10-7.

Taylor Bloye made the start for the Scots and went two innings allowing a run and striking out five.

Dawson Pfost was 2-for-4 with two doubles and three RBIs for Birmingham Southern. Tyler Hamel also had two hits in three at-bats with an RBI. The Panthers utilized eight pitchers, one per inning, on the day and Vinny Torres (0-1) was hit with the loss.
