Baseball Splits Doubleheader at Berry

MOUNT BERRY, Ga. -- The Covenant baseball team responded from a 7-4, game one loss with solid pitching and timely hitting to earn an 8-3 win in the finale on Tuesday night at Berry.

Covenant goes to 12-22 on the year, while Berry, which is receiving votes in the d3baseball.com Top 25, is now 24-11.

After dropping the first game, Covenant found itself down 3-0 after one inning in game two. All of that changed quickly as the Scots scored three runs on three hits in the top of the second to tie the score at 3-3. Ken Alexander had a two-run single in the frame and John Mitchell's RBI single to center field knotted the score.

In the third, Joel Johnson doubled home CJ Edmond to give the Scots a 4-3 lead. Covenant added another run in the fourth on Caleb Bloye's two-out, RBI double that plated Eli Wilborn. The Scots then opened the game up in the seventh by scoring three times, highlighted by RBI singles from Trevor Grapenthin and Mitchell.

Drew Bradley made the start in game two and bounced back from a tough first inning to go five innings. Bradley (2-6) allowed just one hit after the first inning and scattered five hits and three runs with four strikeouts to get the win. Matt Reitz came on for the final two innings and struck out three to record the save.

Mitchell, Edmond, Johnson, and Grapenthin all had two hits apiece in the win for Covenant as the Scots out-hit Berry 11-8. 

Berry reliever Austin Loper (0-1) received the loss. Zack Walch and Dylan Beasley had two hits apiece for Berry.

In the first game, Bloye was 2-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs for Covenant but Berry used a three-run third to take the lead for good in a 7-4 victory.

Taylor Bloye made the start for the Scots and went six innings. Bloye (3-5) gave up just two earned runs as the Covenant defense committed five errors in the loss.

Jacob Delk was 3-for-4 with four RBIs for the host Vikings. JT Eggert (4-1) was the winner as he struck out seven in four innings of work.

UP NEXT

Covenant will have a week off before hosting Birmingham Southern on Tuesday, April 17. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
