ATLANTA, Ga. -- The Covenant baseball team scored eight runs over the final three innings, but could not overcome host Emory in a 12-10 loss on Tuesday afternoon at Chappell Park.
The loss drops Covenant to 9-17 overall, while Emory is 9-10. The game was a makeup from the Feb. 10 rain out. Emory ends up taking two-of-three from the Scots in the regular season series.
Covenant trailed 9-2 entering the seventh inning, but would not go down easily. The Scots scored four runs on four hits off two different Emory relievers in the seventh. CJ Edmond and Eli Wilborn had run-scoring singles sandwiched around a two-run single off the bat of Tyler Moore to slice the deficit to 9-6.
Emory got three runs back in the home half of the seventh as the host Eagles capitalized on four Covenant errors. All three of Emory's runs in the inning were unearned against the Covenant bullpen.
Those runs in the seventh proved to be too much for Covenant to come back from. In the ninth, Covenant put together another rally and plated four runs on only two hits. Wilborn drove in a run with a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch that was followed by a wild pitch. Devin Cerrato had one of those two hits as his double to left field plated both Wilborn and pinch-runner Jay Epperson to get the Scots within 12-10. Emory reliever James Robertson was called on and got the final out as the Scots got the potential tying run to the plate.
It was the fifth time Covenant scored double-digit runs in a game this year, but the first time in which the Scots lost the contest.
Cerrato had an RBI single in the second inning and finished 2-for-6 on the day with three RBIs. Moore went 3-for-4 with a walk, three runs scored, and a pair of RBIs while Joel Johnson and Edmond each had two hits. Wilborn went 1-for-2 with two RBIs, Trenton Nobles had a base hit and a run scored, and Austin Trammell had an RBI ground out in the second inning. Covenant out-hit Emory 11-10 on the day.
Covenant used seven pitchers in the game. Ross Skipper (0-1) was tagged with the loss in relief as he went 1.2 innings. Adam Carver and Josh Aslinger delivered scoreless outings out of the Scots' bullpen.
Emory had to utilize eight pitchers and it was Sam Brzowski (2-0) that collected the victory and Robertson was credited with the save. Jacob Greene was 2-for-4 with a homer and four RBIs to lead Emory. Emory also got two-hit efforts from Richard Brereton and Nick Chambers.
Covenant will get back to USA South play on Friday with game one of a three-game series at Huntingdon. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. EDT.
