LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant baseball team nearly rallied from an 8-0 deficit, but ultimately fell to visiting Berry 9-7 on Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action on Lookout Mountain.

Covenant (4-7) saw Berry (7-3) score five runs in the first and then single runs in the third, fifth and sixth innings to fall behind 8-0.

However, the Scots would not go away. Covenant scored four times on four hits in the bottom of the sixth to get within 8-4. Alex Gonzalez singled to leadoff the inning before Daniel Johnson and Ken Alexander worked walks to load the bases. Donny Lewis produced an RBI fielder's choice to plate Gonzalez. Consecutive RBI singles from Caleb Bloye and Joel Johnson made it 8-3. CJ Edmond followed with a single and a misplay by the Berry pitcher allowed Bloye to sneak home to cut the deficit to 8-4.

After Berry added a run in the seventh to make it 9-4, Covenant was back at it in its half of the inning. With two outs, Lewis singled to center field, scoring Eli Wilborn, and Bloye followed with a bloop double to left field that chased home a hustling Lewis to get the Scots within 9-6.

Covenant looked poised to tie the game in the eighth inning. Edmond and Tyler Moore had back-to-back singles to start the frame before Trenton Nobles laced an RBI single to right field to score Edmond and make it 9-7. With runners at second and third and nobody out, Berry went to ace reliever William Gibbons and Gibbons struck out the next three hitters to keep it a 9-7 Berry lead.

Gibbons then preserved the win for Berry with a perfect ninth inning.

Lewis finished 2-for-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored, while Bloye was 2-for-5 with two RBIs and a run. Edmond also had two hits in four at-bats.

All of the damage for Covenant was done after Berry starter Spence Johns was removed after five innings. Johns (2-0) picked up the win as he faced the minimum through five innings with seven strikeouts and one hit allowed. Gibbons collected the save after recording the final six outs for the Vikings.

Adam Carver (2-1) got the loss for the Scots. Making his first start of the year, Carver allowed five unearned runs in the first inning and went two innings on the day. Andrew Cline threw 1.1 scoreless innings in relief.

Berry scored five times on three hits and capitalized on two Covenant errors in the first inning. Dylan Beasley had a two-run double in the inning and Devin Post capped the outburst with an RBI single as Berry sent nine men to the plate.

Beasley went 3-for-4 with three RBIs and a pair of runs, while Tyler Calvert was also 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Post added two hits in four at-bats with two RBIs and Zack Walch tallied a 2-for-3 day.
