LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant baseball program, under 11th-year head coach Doug Simons, has released its 2017 schedule. The Scots will play 39 regular season games, with 22 of those contests at home.
Covenant will play 10 home games in the month of February beginning on Feb. 3-4 with a three-game series against Greensboro. It will be the second straight year, the Scots will open against the Pride and the series will not count towards USA South standings. On Feb. 10-11, Emory & Henry comes to Lookout Mountain for a three-game set.
The Scots also host a series with Berea (Feb. 17-18) and a single game against Sewanee (Feb. 28) during the month of February.
USA South play opens up on Feb. 24-25 with three games at LaGrange. Covenant's first home conference series is set for March 3-4 against last year's USA South tournament runner-up Maryville. The only other conference series the Scots will host is against defending USA South tournament champion Huntingdon on March 31-April 1.
Covenant will travel to North Carolina Wesleyan (March 10-11), William Peace (March 24-25) and Piedmont (April 7-8) to conclude conference play.
The rest of the non-conference portion of the schedule is a challenging one. The Scots will play a three-game series against perennial national power Emory on March 17-18, with a doubleheader at home on the 18th. The Scots also have a home-and-home with regional foe Berry (March 28 and April 4). Covenant plays Division II member Carson-Newman on the road on April 18 before ending the year with a series against Methodist (April 21-22).
The USA South Tournament is set for April 12-15 in LaGrange, Ga. The top eight teams in the final conference standings will qualify for the event which will run from Wednesday-Saturday.
- Second straight year opening against Greensboro. Covenant swept the Pride on the road in last year's season-opening doubleheader.
- The Scots will get a peek at new USA South member Berea on Feb. 17-18. Berea will join the league starting in the 2017-18 academic year. Covenant is 6-0 all-time vs. the Mountaineers.
