LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Covenant baseball junior Luke Harvey has been voted to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District team, announced the organization on Thursday.
Harvey becomes the first player in program history to earn the honor that recognizes strong athletic and academic ability. He is also the first Covenant student-athlete to be honored in the 2015-16 academic year. Harvey will now be entered into the Academic All-America voting which begins next week.
In order to be nominated for this award, student-athletes must have a GPA of 3.3 or higher and be a significant contributor to their team. The ballot is then voted on by various Sports Information personnel within the district.
A junior from Apex, N.C., Harvey led the team and the USA South in hitting with a career-high .413 average to go along with 15 extra-base hits, 28 RBIs and 39 runs scored. Harvey stole 26 bases on the year, which set a single-season program record. He was an All-USA South second team member and was Covenant's representative on the All-Sportsmanship team.
Harvey started the year on a strong note as he was named USA South Player of the Week on Feb. 15 after going 7-for-10 with five runs scored in a three-game sweep of Emory & Henry the previous week. He was also named to the D3baseball.com Team of the Week for his efforts.
Harvey is majoring in English and is a two-time USA South All-Academic honoree. Additionally, Harvey has earned a spot on Covenant's Dean's List in all five semesters and has served on the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) at Covenant.
