FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Four Covenant baseball players have been named to USA South All-Conference teams as the league announced its annual postseason awards on Wednesday morning. Outfielders Luke Harvey and Trenton Nobles joined starting pitcher Garrett Kriston on the second team, while catcher Z Arima was a honorable mention selection.
Harvey was also Covenant's representative on the All-Sportsmanship team.
A junior from Apex, N.C., Harvey is currently second in the USA South and leads the team with a .411 batting average to go along with 14 extra-base hits and 26 RBIs. The junior has an on-base percentage of .497, has scored 34 runs on the year, which leads the team, and has tallied a team-high 18 multi-hit games on the year. Harvey has tied a single-season program record with 21 stolen bases. He was named USA South Player of the Week on Feb. 15 and also earned D3baseball.com Team of the Week honors two days later.
Nobles, a sophomore from Marianna, Fla., has made the most of his opportunity to play regularly. The sophomore is hitting .370 to go with eight doubles, two triples and 23 RBIs in 30 games played. Nobles has played the role of hero twice this year with walk-off singles against Emory & Henry (Feb. 12) and LaGrange (Feb. 27). He is second on the team with 12 multi-hit games and eight multi-RBI games and enters the USA South Tournament with an 11-game hitting streak, the longest of the year for a Scot.
Kriston, a senior from Trinity, Fla., has put together a tremendous senior year. The right-hander is currently 8-2 with a 4.41 ERA and four complete-games, including one complete-game shutout. Kriston leads the conference and Division III with 83 strikeouts in his 69.1 innings of work. His 83 strikeouts is a single-season program record and Kriston also broke the program's career record for punch outs earlier this year. Kriston has three games with double-digit strikeouts and has struck out at least nine batters in six of his 10 starts. The senior tossed a two-hit shutout of William Peace (March 25) with 11 strikeouts in a 1-0 victory and was named USA South Pitcher of the Week after the performance.
Arima, a junior from Herriman, Utah, picks up honorable mention honors after hitting an even .400 in 18 games played this year. The junior joined the team after helping lead the men's basketball program to a conference title and started hitting right away with two hits in each of his first three games. Arima has a home run, nine RBIs and seven runs scored. Behind the plate, Arima has thrown out eight runners attempting to steal for a 42.1 percentage.
Major awards in the USA South included LaGrange's Blake Butcher being named Player of the Year and Ferrum's Jake Perkins the Pitcher of the Year. N.C. Wesleyan's Trey Croom was named Rookie of the Year, while Hunter Peck of Ferrum was the Rookie Pitcher of the Year. Ferrum head coach Ryan Brittle earned Coach of the Year honors after guiding the Panthers to a regular season title.
Covenant (20-15) opens the USA South Tournament on Thursday at 8 p.m. against No. 3 seed N.C. Wesleyan at Fleming Stadium in Wilson, N.C.
