LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant baseball team fell 3-2 against Berry in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon.
Covenant drops to 10-11 overall, while Berry goes to 16-6 on the year
In the first, Berry scored on an error to take a 1-0 lead. Covenant tied the score In the bottom of the second, Z Arima singled to left field to drive in Trenton Nobles, who singled to leadoff the inning, making it 1-1.
Neither team scored in the middle innings. Berry broke through in the sixth with a run on Ben Jernigan's RBI single that made it 2-1. Then, in the seventh, Covenant made a comeback and Perry Rigby scored when Taylor Bloye reached first on a fielder's choice. In the eighth, the Scots loaded the bases with two outs but could not bring home a run to break the 2-2 tie.
In the ninth, Berry's Hunter White led off with a single and his pinch-runner Leo Narrison later scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch. Covenant was set down in order in its half of the ninth by Berry reliever JP Chamblee.
Arima led Covenant going 3-for-4 with an RBI. Luke Harvey went 2-for-3, Nobles was 2-for-4 and Bloye tallied an RBI in four at-bats. Grant Kierpa made the start for the Scots and went five strong innings allowing one unearned run on one hit with five strikeouts. Alec Mitchell (2-2) gets the loss in relief after throwing the final two innings.
The visiting Vikings used six pitchers to get the victory. Chamblee (2-0) picks up his second win of the year after tossing two scoreless innings.
Covenant opens a three-game series with No. 4 ranked Emory with a single-game on Friday at 3 p.m. on Lookout Mountain. Games two and three of the series will be played in Atlanta on Saturday.
