FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Covenant baseball sophomore Joel Johnson was named the USA South Player of the Week while freshman Ryan Gosney collected Rookie Pitcher of the Week honors, announced the conference on Monday.
Johnson and Gosney both helped lead the Scots to a doubleheader sweep of Greensboro on Saturday to open the 2016 season.
Johnson, a sophomore infielder from Alingsas, Sweden, went a combined 6-for-8 (.750) with four runs scored, one RBI, one double, one walk and one stolen base as the Scots swept a two-game non-conference series from Greensboro to open the season. He went 2-for-4 with with two runs, an RBI and a stolen base in a 10-4 victory in game one before going 4-for-4 with a double, two runs and a walk in a 9-4 win in the nightcap.
Gosney, a freshman right-hander from Greensboro, N.C., tossed the final 2.2 innings without allowing a run in a 10-4 season-opening non-conference victory over Greensboro in his only appearance of the week. Gosney struck out two and allowed just three baserunners in his outing.
