FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Covenant baseball freshman Caleb Bloye was named USA South Rookie of the Year while senior Scott Gillespie earned second team honors as the conference announced its season awards on Thursday.
Senior Will Cleland was Covenant's representative on the All-Sportsmanship team.
Bloye becomes the first baseball player to earn rookie of the year honors in the USA South. Gillespie's second team nod is the second of his career.
Bloye, a freshman first baseman from Dallas, Georgia, compiled a .347 batting average, a .386 on-base percentage and a .415 slugging percentage this season. Bloye totaled 28 RBIs, 13 runs scored, seven doubles and one home run. In USA South-only action, he led all rookies with a .382 batting average which ranked ninth overall. The freshman led the team with 18 multi-hit games and nine multi-RBI games. Finally, Bloye was named USA South Rookie of the Week once this season (April 20).
Gillespie, a senior from Milton, Georgia, finished his career in fine fashion this year hitting .358 with six home runs and 27 RBIs. He surpassed the 200 career hit plateau on April 18 and ends his career with 204 hits, second most in program history. The senior was a two-time USA South Player of the Week honoree this season garnering the award on Feb. 8 and again on April 13. Gillespie's career totals include a .349 batting average, 131 RBIs, 10 home runs, 48 doubles and 58 multi-hit games. He holds the career program record for walks with 96.
Maryville's Nick Dean was named the USA South Player of the Year for a second straight season. Methodist, the regular season champion, had the Pitcher of the Year in Josh Howard and the Coach of the Year in Tom Austin. Huntingdon's Jared Gonzalez earned Rookie Pitcher of the Year honors.

Covenant ended the year with a 15-23 record and an 11-16 mark in the USA South.
