Scots Win Fourth Straight with 12-2 Victory over Johnson

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Will Cleland was 3-for-3 with five RBIs and David Lockwood added three RBIs of his own to lead the Covenant baseball team to a 12-2 victory over NCCAA foe Johnson on Monday afternoon.

The win is the Scots' fourth straight and moves Covenant to 13-6 on the season.

Seven different Covenant pitchers combined to throw a five-hitter with two runs and four strikeouts on the day. Spencer Smith started and threw two scoreless frames before being relieved by Jordan Lester. Lester (3-1) was credited with the win after going two innings and allowing one run on two hits. Chris Rollins, Ryan Larrazabal, Jonah Paul and Dan Thomas each threw an inning of scoreless ball, while Taylor Bloye gave up one run on a hit in his inning of work.

Offensively, the Scots picked up right where they left off over the weekend. Covenant scored 12 runs on 11 hits and reached double digit runs for the fourth straight game.

Lockwood finished 2-for-4 and Rollins was 2-for-2. Perry Rigby, fresh off being named USA South Player of the Week, was 1-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Scott Gillespie was also 1-for-3 and Paul Phillips had a hit and two runs in two at-bats.

Off the bench, Ben Mitchell went 1-for-1 and Luke Harvey recorded an RBI in two at-bats.

Covenant scored four times in the first inning with Cleland and Rigby producing RBI singles. The Scots added two more runs in the second via Cleland's second RBI and a Gillespie RBI double to make it 6-0. Cleland added a two-run single in the third to stretch the lead to 8-0.

The Scots scored four more times in the fifth to put the game away. Cleland had an RBI walk, Lockwood drove in a pair with a double, and Harvey had an RBI groundout.

Covenant will be back in action on Friday at USA South foe LaGrange for a three-game series beginning at 7 p.m. The Scots' home game vs. Rhodes scheduled for Tuesday has been postponed due to the forecasted poor weather conditions.
