BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- David Lockwood went 3-for-5 with a run, but the Covenant baseball team could not match the offensive output from host Birmingham Southern as the Panthers defeated the Scots 10-3 on Monday evening.
The loss is the fourth straight for the Scots as they drop to 6-5 overall. Birmingham Southern, ranked No. 23 in the current D3baseball.com Top 25, improves to 12-2 on the season.
Five other Scots joined Lockwood in the hit column with one apiece. KC Simons, Will Cleland, Scott Gillespie, Will Carlton and Chris Rollins all had one hit. Simons drove in two runs and Carlton also added another RBI.
Covenant got on the board first in the second inning when Simons drew a bases-loaded walk to give the Scots a 1-0 lead. Birmingham Southern responded with two runs in its half of the second and the Panthers added four in the third and four more in the fourth to pull away.
Zach Wingate led Birmingham Southern's offense by going 2-for-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored. Jacob Mayfield and David Bourbonnais added two RBIs apiece.
Covenant used six different pitchers on the day. Spencer Smith (0-1) got the start and picked up his first loss of the season after throwing the first two innings. Dan Thomas, Ryan Larrazabal and Rollins combined to throw 4.1 shutout innings out of the bullpen.
The Panthers' Ben Hession (1-0) gets credit for the win as he pitched the middle three innings and allowed two runs on five hits.
Covenant will return home for a three-game series with USA South rival Piedmont starting on Friday at 2 p.m. The two schools will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 12 p.m.
