Scots Weekly: Stats & Notes (Feb. 24-March 1)

USA South play began for the spring sports this past week. The baseball team swept a three-game series with North Carolina Wesleyan, the women's tennis team defeated a pair of USA South foes. Softball fell in all four of its conference games, though the Lady Scots took one team to extra innings, while men's tennis came close but fell 5-4 on consecutive days.

RESULTS:

Baseball (3-0):
Feb. 28 - Won 12-6 over North Carolina Wesleyan
March 1 - Won 10-0 and 5-2 over North Carolina Wesleyan

Softball (0-4):
Feb. 28 - Lost 7-2 and then 8-4 (eight innings) to Greensboro
March 1 - Lost 8-0 and then 9-5 to Ferrum

Women's Tennis (2-1):
Feb. 26 - Lost 7-2 at Berry
Feb. 28 - Won 9-0 over Greensboro
March 1 - Won 9-0 over Ferrum

Men's Tennis (0-3):
Feb. 26 - Lost 9-0 at Berry
Feb. 28 - Lost 5-4 to Greensboro
March 1 - Lost 5-4 to Ferrum

BY THE NUMBERS:

0: The number of runs given up by baseball starting pitcher Garrett Kriston in two starts this season. Kriston threw eight shutout innings in Saturday's 10-0 win over North Carolina Wesleyan. He allowed just five hits and struck out 10. On the year, Kriston has surrendered six hits with 20 strikeouts in 15 innings of work.

1: Number of career home runs for softball's Morgan Lane. The sophomore from Chattanooga, launched her first career homer, a two-run shot to straightaway center field in Friday's 9-5 loss to Greensboro. 

2: Six different women's tennis players earned two singles victories each over the weekend as the Lady Scots routed USA South foes Greensboro and Ferrum by 9-0 scores. Madeline Hyatt, Gretchen Rowe, Claire Luger, Sarah Carter, Gracie Smith and Ellen Kirkpatrick all contributed to the victories.

8: Number of doubles hit by the baseball team in Friday's 12-6 win over North Carolina Wesleyan. That number set a new program record that was previously seven (set twice back in 2012). 

4: Men's tennis freshman Frank Portlock won a total of four matches (two in singles and two in doubles) against USA South foes over the weekend. Portlock played at the No. 2 singles spot and earned a 6-3, 6-2 win over Greensboro's Matthew Troy on Friday, then a 6-2, 6-3 victory against Ferrum's Taylor Napier on Saturday. In doubles play, Portlock and teammate Roy Anderson knocked off Greensboro's duo of Troy and Kyle Gatti 9-8 (7-3) before defeating Ferrum's Garret Freese and Danny Khourn 8-3. 

NOTES:

The baseball team's three-game sweep of North Carolina Wesleyan was its first since 2012 when the Scots took all three games against Emory & Henry... The softball team hosts Birmingham Southern on Tuesday before traveling to Meredith (Friday) and William Peace (Saturday) this weekend... Baseball travels to Montgomery, Ala., to face off against Huntingdon for three games beginning on Friday night... Women's tennis is also at Meredith (Friday) and William Peace (Saturday) this weekend.
