Scots Downed by Campbellsville Late

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Covenant baseball team went toe-to-toe with the No. 1 seed Campbellsville (Ky.), but the Scots ultimately fell in the bottom of the seventh inning on a wild pitch as the Tigers claimed a 3-2 win on Thursday afternoon.

Covenant (26-14) moves into the loser's bracket of the Mid-East Region Tournament and will face the winner of today's third game between Hiwassee and Tennessee Temple on Friday at 1 p.m. central. Campbellsville (33-19) moves into the winner's bracket.

The Scots got on the scoreboard first in the top of the first inning. Will Cleland singled to left center field to leadoff the frame and was brought home on a David Lockwood RBI double one batter later. Lockwood advanced to third and later scored on a passed ball giving the Scots a 2-0 lead.

But Campbellsville responded with two runs in its half of the first inning. Both runs came with two outs as the Tigers' Aaron Schwoebel reached on an infield single and a throwing error by Covenant allowed Tanner Nielsen to score. With runners on first and third and two outs, Schwoebel got into a rundown at first and was tagged out after Michael Bush had come across to score and tie the game at 2-2.

From there, both starting pitchers settled into a pitchers duel. Covenant starter Micah Mabe ended up going six-plus innings allowing three runs, one earned, while striking out five and walking two.

Mabe got out of a major jam in the bottom of the sixth inning. Campbellsville loaded the bases with one out, but a fielder's choice ground out and a strikeout got Mabe and the Scots out of the inning with the game still tied at 2-2.

Lefty Bret DeRooy of Campbellsville was Mabe's counterpart and he was just as effective. DeRooy picks up the win as he went all seven innings surrendering two runs, one earned, with six strikeouts and a walk.

Campbellsville was able to scratch across the winning run in the bottom of the seventh. Travis Hayes and Nielsen led off the inning with consecutive hits off Mabe. Covenant reliver Alec Mitchell came into the contest with runners on second and third and nobody out. Mitchell threw a 1-2 pitch way outside and to the backstop allowing Hayes to come across with the winning run.

Cleland had two of Covenant's seven hits as he was 2-for-3 with a run scored. Nielsen accumulated three hits for Campbellsville.
