ROME, Ga. -- The USA South Athletic Conference announced on Wednesday (Sept. 2) that men's and women's basketball conference games during the fall 2020 semester have been postponed due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. The presidents of the USA South voted unanimously to postpone all conference competition until the spring 2021 semester.
In accordance with the USA South's decision, Covenant will not compete against outside competition in the sports of men's basketball and women's basketball this fall. The basketball programs join all other Covenant athletic programs in not competing in regular season play during the fall semester.
"We are supportive of the decision by the USA South Athletic Conference, as we seek to protect the health and safety of our student-athletes," Covenant director of athletics Dr. Tim Sceggel said.
The USA South's decision was made in light of the lack of consistent improvement regarding positive COVID-19 cases throughout the league's geographical footprint. Additionally, recent NCAA testing mandates, when institutions compete against outside competition, were major contributing factors to the decision.
"Men's and women's basketball are the only sports in which the USA South conducts regular season and tournament play during the winter season," stated USA South Commissioner Dr. Tom Hart. "By pushing these sports to the second semester, we allow the time necessary for the COVID landscape to improve."
"Although student-athletes will not be able to compete this fall, we are excited they still will have an opportunity to grow as athletes through practice, and grow as men and women of the King as our coaches remain committed to our discipleship efforts in the context of college athletics," added Sceggel.
Any further announcements from the USA South regarding the 2020-21 academic season will be announced later.
