LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant Athletes of the Month sponsored by First Bank, the official bank of the Covenant Scots, for the month of February are women's track and field freshman Elysse Carrillo and baseball senior CJ Edmond.
The Covenant Athletes of the Month is an initiative aiming to recognize the best female and male athletes and their performances during a month. It is the first time this season that Carrillo and Edmond have earned honors.
Carrillo, a freshman from Sorrento, Fla., posted impressive results in two indoor meets during the month of February. The freshman claimed first place finishes in both of her 400 meter events and toppled program records in the process. Carrillo finished in 1:04.09 in the 400 at the Tiger Indoor Invitational to set a then-program record and then bested that mark with a time of 1:02.74 in the Sewanee Indoor Invitational en route to another individual title.
Carrillo was also a part of the 4x400 relay team with Virginia Kay Roberts, Maggie Henry and SK Lipperd that set a program record at 4:21.24 at the Sewanee Indoor Invitational.
Edmond, a senior from Alpharetta, Ga., batted .424 with a home run, 13 RBIs, and 12 runs scored over 10 games during the month of February. The left-handed hitting outfielder produced eight extra-base hits during the month and drew nine walks as he posted a .574 on-base percentage and a .758 slugging percentage. Edmond had four multi-hit games during the month, including two three-hit performances, and had three multi-RBI games.
On the year, Edmond is hitting .429 with a team-leading two home runs, 17 RBIs, and 15 runs scored as the Scots are 7-4 overall with a 3-0 record in the USA South.
