ROME, Ga. -- The Covenant men's basketball and women's basketball programs were voted as USA South Team Sportsmanship Award winners for their respective sports, announced the conference on Wednesday.
It is the fifth consecutive year that the men's basketball program has garnered the award, while the women's basketball program collects the honor for a second time overall.
The conference hands out a Sportsmanship Award for 12 conference-sponsored team sports. Men's and women's cross country, men's and women's track and field, along with men's golf are not included due to a lack of a conference schedule in those particular sports. For each of the other sports, all team members vote for the teams he/she deemed to have demonstrated the best overall sportsmanship throughout the season. The team garnering the most votes receives that sports' Sportsmanship Award.
The men's basketball team, under head coach Neal Young, claimed a second straight USA South West Division regular season title in 2019-20 and finished the year with a 15-12 overall record. The women's basketball team, under second-year head coach Skylar Bareford, qualified for the USA South Tournament for a fourth straight year and ended the season 10-16.
Over the course of the year, the institution that wins the most individual sport awards is presented with the overall USA South Sportsmanship Trophy. The award was developed as a result of the SAAC's commitment to maintaining a sportsmanlike environment on each of our campuses. Covenant has claimed at least a share of the USA South Sportsmanship Trophy in each of the last six years.
