Covenant Athletes of the Month - December: Ruthie Moore and Chris Barnette

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant Athletes of the Month sponsored by First Bank, the official bank of the Covenant Scots, for the month of December are women's basketball freshman Ruthie Moore and men's basketball sophomore Chris Barnette.

The Covenant Athletes of the Month is an initiative aiming to recognize the best female and male athletes and their performances during a month. It is the first career honors for Moore and Barnette.

Moore, a freshman from Laurens, S.C., averaged 9.8 points, 10.0 rebounds, 6.5 assists, and 2.8 steals per game during the month as Covenant went 2-2. The freshman tallied all of those numbers while playing all but six minutes in the Scots' four games. Moore nearly had a triple-double in an 87-77 win over Johnson on Dec. 14 with a career-high 16 points and 11 assists with nine rebounds and earned USA South Rookie of the Week following that performance.

She also flirted with a triple-double in a 55-46 win over Agnes Scott on Dec. 4 with eight points, eight rebounds, and seven assists. Moore also grabbed a career-high 15 rebounds in a loss to Bob Jones on Dec. 10.

For the year, Moore is averaging 9.6 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 4.7 assists per contest. She ranks second in the USA South in assists per game and third in minutes played (35.5).

Barnette, a sophomore from Wake Forest, N.C., helped the Scots to a 2-2 record during the month by averaging 19.0 points, while shooting 48.3 percent from the floor, with 5.3 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game. The sophomore scored a career-high 25 points, 23 of which came in the second half, with seven assists to lead the Scots to a 79-77, comeback win over Huntingdon on Dec. 7. In that win, Barnette scored the final 16 points for the Scots, including the game-winner in the final seconds.

Additionally, Barnette had 19 points and five rebounds in a 68-62 win at Maryville on Dec. 4. He also had 18 points, nine rebounds and seven assists in an overtime loss at Belhaven on Dec. 28.

On the year, Barnette is scoring 16.7 points per game with 4.3 rebounds and 4.1 assists per contest.
