LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- With the Thanksgiving season upon us, the USA South Athletic Conference's annual "Cans Across the Conference" initiative recently came to a close as the 18 conference member institutions collected cans and other non-perishable items at their school to benefit a local charity.

The drive is organized by campus Student Athlete Advisory Committees (SAAC) across the conference.

Covenant and its Student Athlete Advisory Committee, overseen by head women's basketball coach Skylar Bareford and assistant women's soccer coach Rachel Lemay, collected 1,134 items, a new single-year record for the department. All items will be donated to the Chattanooga-area Food Bank, which reaches 20 counties in the region.

The monetary donations by Covenant will be able to provide over 1,500 meals.

Overall, the USA South institutions collected a record 69,387 items this fall, an improvement of 5,328 from last year. Over the 16-year history of the program, USA South institutions have donated 575,168 items to various organizations.

This is the second consecutive year that Covenant has topped its record for donated items. Covenant was one of nine USA South institutions to set a single-year record for items collected during this year's campaign.
