LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant Athletes of the Month sponsored by Atlantic Capital, the official bank of the Covenant Scots, for the month of December are women's basketball senior Joanna Smith and men's basketball sophomore Will Crumly.

The Covenant Athletes of the Month is a new initiative aiming to recognize the best female and male athletes and their performances during a month. It is the second time this year that Crumly has been honored, and the first for Smith.

Smith, a senior from Chattanooga, Tenn., averaged 17.0 points and 9.7 rebounds per game in six contests during the month of December. The senior hit a career milestone as she eclipsed 1,000 career points in an 83-74 victory over Webster on Dec. 8. She was named USA South Player of the Week on Dec. 10 after averaging 19.5 points and 15.5 rebounds in two games the week prior. Smith had a season-high 24 points in a loss to Huntingdon on Dec. 1 and registered three 20-point performances during the month.

For the season, Smith is currently averaging 12.4 points, shooting 50.8 percent from the field, with 7.3 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game.

Crumly, a sophomore from Marietta, Ga., continued his torrid start to the season as he averaged 20.2 points and 9.8 rebounds during the month. The sophomore scored in double figures in all regular season games and produced a career-high 33 points in a loss to Louisiana College on Dec. 29. Crumly finished the month with consecutive double-doubles against Oglethorpe (Dec. 15), Mary Hardin-Baylor (Dec. 28) and Louisiana College (Dec. 29) and continued that stretch into January.

On the season, Crumly, who was named USA South Player of the Week on Monday (Jan. 7), leads Covenant and is second in the USA South in scoring average at 22.2 points per game and 9.8 rebounds per game. The sophomore has totaled seven double-doubles this year, the most for a Scot in a single-season since 2003-04. Crumly is shooting 59.2 percent from the floor, fourth-best in the conference.
