LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Week 5 was yet another successful week for Covenant athletics. Women's soccer continued its winning streak, as did volleyball, while men's soccer, men's golf, and women's cross country were also successful this week.
The Lady Scots soccer team has won eight games in a row. Two of those wins were added last week. Mae Mae Johnson scored her first goal of the season to lead the team to victory 1-0 over Birmingham Southern. Hannah Bales held the Lady Scots defense together with six saves to ensure the win. The second match had a similar ending, with the Lady Scots coming out on top 1-0, but this time it was Salem College on the other end. Mo Cross scored in the 11th minute to earn the win for Covenant. Men’s soccer lost a rough game on Wednesday 3-1 against Oglethorpe University. Hunter Harrison scored Covenant’s goal from just outside the box, but they could not find another. The Scots came back to the field on Saturday to beat Huntingdon College soundly 4-1 with goals by Tyler Morrison, Danny Knight, Ian Meredith, and Noah Wiersema. Oglethorpe recap | Huntingdon recap
Volleyball began their week by beating Agnes Scott College 3-0. Jessica Chittenden led the offense with 11 kills. The Lady Scots won the next day against Wesleyan College 3-0. Chelsea Van Dyk took the lead on offense for this game after earning 14 kills. The Lady Scots continued their win streak by beating Salem College 3-1 and William Peace University 3-2 on Saturday. Van Dyk led both matches, 15 kills in the first and 13 kills in the second, with Estes Carlson tallying 32 digs in the William Peace match. Men’s golf had another solid showing at the Emmanuel Invitational as they placed sixth out of 12 schools. Trey Patterson had a two-day score of 146 to place him third individually. Levi Nix led the tournament after a round one score of 69 and ended up in fourth place with a 148 total. Patterson and Nix were then selected to participate in the NCCAA Men's Golf National Tournament October 21-24. Emmanuel Invitational recap
The Lady Scots cross country team was back in action on Saturday as they won the GSAC Pre-Conference race. Freshman Spookie Eaves finished second with a time of 24:37.57, four seconds off the lead. Beth Burgess ran another great race and placed fourth with a time of 25:40.91. Four Lady Scots finished in the top 10. GSAC Pre-Conference Meet recap
