LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- This week was a very successful week for Covenant athletics, with teams racking up some big wins. Covenant varsity teams did not lose a single contest all week going 8-0.
The week got off to a strong start as volleyball setter Stephanie Kirkpatrick and cross country runner Beth Burgess were both named GSAC Players of the Week.
Volleyball started off by playing Spelman College and gave them little room to breathe, winning 3-0 (25-6, 25-2, 25-9). Chelsea Van Dyk helped secure the win with 11 kills. She was backed up by Stephanie Kirkpatrick who had 27 assists. The Lady Scots won two more matches on Saturday, both 3-0, against Huntingdon College and Piedmont College. Piedmont beat the Lady Scots earlier this season and the Lady Scots rallied together to avenge the loss. Spelman recap | Huntingdon/Piedmont recap
The Lady Scots soccer team has won six matches in a row after beating Greenville (Ill.) College solidly 4-0 and Wesleyan College 7-0. Against Greenville, Katelyn Newsome scored twice and was followed quickly by scores from Jessica Rowe and Kathryn Allison. Several of the Lady Scots came up with a goal against Wesleyan College. Newsome started the scoring and Joanna Brauer scored the last goal in the rout over the Pioneers. Greenville recap | Wesleyan recap
Matt Hudnut led the team this week on the soccer field. He and Tyler Morrison each scored a goal on Wednesday to beat Emory & Henry 2-0. Covenant played Greenville College next and fell behind 2-0 at halftime. The Scots picked it back up to tie the game thanks to Chris Pifer’s penalty kick and Hunter Harrison’s deflected ball. After having a few rough overtimes in previous games, Hudnut scored in the 99th minute, reminiscent of last years’ homecoming game. He repeated the feat the next day as LaGrange College forced the Scots into another overtime. Joel Friesen sent a perfect pass to Hudnut to end the game in the 96th minute to give Covenant a 2-1 win.
