LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- It was the final full week of athletics for the 2012-13 academic year at Covenant this past week. The baseball team continued its outstanding season as they won three games, the women's tennis squad notched two victories, and the softball team concluded its regular season.
Women's tennis went 2-0 on the week against GSAC competition. The Lady Scots received strong performances from all positions in a 9-0 rout of Wesleyan. The following day, Covenant took on Spelman and that match came down to the final singles match as Sara Kathryn Cole rallied from a set down to score a victory to give the Lady Scots a 5-4 win. In the Spelman match, Kelsey Whitted, playing with an injured leg, teamed with Sarah Carter at No. 1 doubles to claim an 8-3 win and then won at No. 3 singles 5-7, 6-2, 6-4. The softball team was unable to find the win column as they were swept at Huntingdon and Agnes Scott. The Lady Scots nearly pulled off a victory in the second game at Agnes Scott, but fell 3-2 in nine innings despite a strong effort in the circle from Hannah Rogers (8.1 innings, three runs). Baseball went 3-2 over the week as they split a doubleheader with Berry and then took two-out-of-three from LaGrange on the weekend. Sophomore pitcher Micah Mabe set a new Covenant single-game record for strikeouts with 13 as he tossed a complete-game in a 4-3 comeback win over LaGrange in game one of the series. Perry Rigby notched the go-ahead single in the top of the ninth as the Scots rallied from a 3-2 deficit. On Saturday, freshman pitcher Garrett Kriston threw a nine inning complete-game four-hitter (and threw 79 pitches) to lead Covenant to a 3-1 win over LaGrange.
