Dr. Tim Sceggel was promoted to Director of Athletics in July of 2016 and will begin his 11th overall year in athletics in 2018-19, joining the department in 2007. The priorities in the athletic department under his leadership have focused on discipleship, academic success, recruiting, and the pursuit of excellence. The mission statement for the department was implemented to reflect this in 2018. Also in 2018, the department recorded one of its highest ever finishes in the USA South President’s cup standings. This on court success is due in part to the number of highly successful head coaches hired under his watch, which have included the sports of men’s basketball x2, softball x2, men’s soccer, and women’s basketball. Three of these coaches have set school records for most wins by a first year head coach at the institution. Additionally, 4 other coaches have set or tied school records for wins during his tenure.
Further, Covenant’s sportsmanship has continued to be recognized by the USA South, as the athletic department has been the institutional winner of the sportsmanship trophy in 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018. Sceggel also developed and launched the Scots Athletic Club in 2017, which is the first structured fundraising effort of the athletic department in the college's history.
He was previously the Associate AD at Covenant where he was responsible for a host of various responsibilities within the department including compliance. Through his compliance duties, he successfully directed the completion of the college's transition from the NAIA to full membership in NCAA Division III in 2013.
In 2014, Sceggel received the prestigious Emerging Athletic Administrator award by the National Association of Division III Athletic Administrators. The award is given to one national honoree who has demonstrated a pattern of excellence and achievement in athletic administration during their first seven years as a full-time athletic administrator at the Division III level. Later in 2014, Sceggel added to his list of professional accolades as he was named to Sports Launch magazine's "Thirty Under 30" list in its May issue.
In addition to his role in athletics, Sceggel holds faculty status in the Sport Administration program teaching various courses each semester. He was part of the two-person team that developed and launched the Sport Administration major in 2015. His previous stops include the athletic department at the University of Louisville in Louisville, Ky., and the athletic department at Wheaton College in Wheaton, Ill.
In addition to his bachelor's degree in Sociology from Covenant, he holds a master's degree in Sport Administration from the University of Louisville. Sceggel also serves on the Sport Administration Advisory Board at Louisville. Additionally, Sceggel earned a doctorate from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa in Higher Education Administration, where his research focused on the faith development on student athletes in the context of Christian college athletics.
Tim and his wife, Allie, and son Strotman, reside on Lookout Mountain.
