Baseball Scots Picked Second in USA South Preseason Poll; Receive Votes in Top 25
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The Covenant baseball team, under ninth-year head coach Doug Simons, has been picked to finish second in the USA South by the conference's 11 head coaches in the preseason poll, announced the league on Wednesday.
Nationally, Covenant received four votes in the D3baseball.com Preseason Top 25 which was also released on Wednesday. Other USA South members Huntingdon and Piedmont also received votes in the poll.
In the USA South poll, Covenant picked up three first place votes and 93 total points, but it was Ferrum that edged out the Scots as the preseason favorite. The Panthers garnered seven first place votes and 94 total points. FULL STORY
BY THE NUMBERS:
48: The 3-point percentage for women's basketball junior Haley Soles over the last five games. Soles has been red-hot from outside making 24-of-50 3s since Jan. 16. During that span, she has three games of at least six made 3-pointers, including seven against William Peace. Soles is shooting 38.5 percent from 3-point land for the season and making 3.3 3s per game.
85: Number of points scored by the women's basketball team in Friday's 85-44 win over Mary Baldwin. It's the most points Covenant has scored in a game since Nov. 16, 2010 when they tallied 94 in a loss at Sewanee.
19: The number of points for men's basketball junior TJ Cox in Wednesday's 86-81 loss to LaGrange. Cox set a career-high in points and went 7-for-10 from the field with three 3-pointers while dishing out four assists. Cox averaged 15.5 points, 4.5 assists and 2.0 rebounds during the week.
- Men's and women's basketball teams are at Piedmont on Wednesday but return home on Saturday vs. Huntingdon.
- USA South preseason polls for softball, men's and women's tennis and men's golf will be released later this week. Sprign sports begin on Feb. 6 when baseball hosts Emory & Henry.
