Scots Weekly: Stats & Notes - Final Spring Edition

As the spring semester winds down, the athletics year at Covenant nears the end as well. Take a look back at the spring sports with stats and notes from the seasons below.

BY THE NUMBERS:

200: Baseball senior Scott Gillespie became the second player in modern program history to eclipse 200 career hits. Gillespie hit the milestone with a double in the second game of a doubleheader against Huntingdon on April 18. He ends his career with 204 hits.

1: Softball sophomore Jordan Brett hit for the cycle on April 11 at Mary Baldwin in the second game of a doubleheader. Brett becomes the first player in program history to accomplish the feat. In her first at-bat, Brett was hit by a pitch but her next four plate appearances went like this: triple, double, single, home run. The home run capped a six-run rally for the Lady Scots as they took an 11-6 victory.

8: Number of victories for the men's tennis team this year. The Scots collected the most wins since 2010 and recorded a program-record five conference wins. Covenant qualified for the USA South tournament for the first time in program history.

35: Number of career doubles wins in dual matches for women's tennis senior Gretchen Rowe, setting a program record. Rowe won 10 doubles matches this season to surpass Stephanie Sizemore on the all-time list

73: Scott McKnight carded a 73 in the first round of the Rhodes Spring Classic on April 13. The round was a new career-low for the senior from Birmingham, Ala. McKnight finished the tournament tied for 44th overall.

NOTES:

  • The women's tennis team went 12-7 overall marking the second straight season of double-digit victories. The program is 28- 15 over the last two years with a 19-5 mark in the USA South.
  • Covenant sent several runners to the Sewanee Invitational on April 17. The men competed in the 4x400 relay for the first time in the school's history. Graham Massot, John Weaks, Justin Jantomaso and Eliot Kaufmann formed the team and finished in a time of 3:53.
  • Men's tennis freshman Chris Cox won 10 singles matches on the year and in the process became the first men's player to record at least 10 wins since 2011.
  • Tennis head coach John Hirte was named USA South Coach of the Year on the men's side. He is the first tennis head coach, either men or women, to earn a coach of the year honor.
