TALLULAH FALLS, Ga. -- Several Covenant cross country runners set personal record times as the teams competed in the Piedmont Invitational on Saturday. The men came in fourth place overall, while the women were third in the event.
The course was the same one that will be used for the USA South Championships in late October.
Among a field of many USA South teams, the women placed higher than Meredith, Maryville, Salem and LaGrange. The men fared better than Maryville and LaGrange in the field.
The women had five runners set personal records led by Lilly Smith's 6k time of 25:07 which placed her fifth overall. Hannah Samuels was 12th with a personal record time of 25:54, while Margaret Fitch was 20th with her 6k time of 26:44. Anna Danek (27:31) and Caroline Pepper (28:03) rounded out the top five Covenant runners and set personal bests along the way.
Hannah Cotton also set a personal record by finishing the course in 34:20.
On the men's side, Micah Sneller again led the Scots with an 8k time of 29:12, while Matthew Tueller was the second Covenant finisher at 30:57 for a 17th place finish. Nathan Bierema came in at 20th with a time of 31:03, while Caleb Keitt was 22nd at a personal best time of 31:26. Phil Carrenard also set a personal record at 31:35 and came in 24th.
Host Piedmont took the team titles on both sides. Nicholas Evans of Oglethorpe was the individual champion on the men's side with a time of 28:39, while Piedmont's Reese Bowles was the women's winner at 24:14.

Covenant will compete in the Berry Viking Open on Saturday, Oct. 15 in Rome, Ga. Races begin at 9 a.m.
