XC: Women Place 6th, Men 7th at UNG Invitational

OAKWOOD, Ga. -- The Covenant men's and women's cross country teams competed at the University of North Georgia Invitational on Saturday morning in Oakwood, Ga. The women, paced by Lilly Smith, finished sixth out of 14 teams, while the men were led by Micah Sneller and finished seventh of 10 teams.

On the women's side, Smith paced the Scots with a 5k time of 20:41 to finish in 22nd place overall in the event. Hannah Samuels ran the course in 21:12 for a 33rd place finish and Margaret Fitch completed in 21:53 to place 46th overall. Freshmen Anna Danek (22:08) and Caroline Pepper (22:33) rounded out the top five Covenant finishers.

"Our women did a great of staying close together throughout the race," head coach Katie Stanford said.

Emily Kearney of SCAD Atlanta took home the individual title and helped lead SCAD Atlanta to a team title on the women's side.

Sneller led the men's side with an 8k time of 30:13 and placed 31st overall. Nathan Bierema finished in 30:23 to place, while Matthew Tueller was right behind finishing in 34th with a time of 30:24. Caleb Keitt was 37th overall wth a time of 30:26 and Phil Moore completed the top five Covenant runners with his time of 33:30.

SCAD Savannah took the team title on the men's side, while Shorter's Alfred Chelanga was the individual champion.

"Our top four on the men's side did a great job of running together," Stanford said. "I was really happy with the way the freshmen on both the men's and women's teams performed today"
