Women's Cross Country Selected Second in USA South Preseason Poll

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Under fourth-year head coach Katie Stanford, the Covenant women's cross country team has been picked to finish second in the USA South preseason poll, announced the league on Wednesday afternoon.

Covenant picked up one first place vote and had 87 overall points to finish in second. Meredith, the defending conference champ, was once again picked to win the league as the Avenging Angels received 10 of the 11 first place votes. Maryville, Mary Baldwin and Piedmont rounded out the top five teams.

Wrapping up the preseason poll was Methodist, Averett, LaGrange, Ferrum, North Carolina Wesleyan and William Peace.

Last season, Covenant placed second in the conference meet but Beth Burgess captured the individual title. Burgess is the lone senior on this year's team that also includes four other returners. All-USA South runners Esther Anderson and Anna Hankal both return as well.

The USA South Championships will once again be held in Greensboro, North Carolina on Saturday, Nov. 1.

The season gets underway on Friday, Aug. 29 with the Mountaintop Invitational on Lookout Mountain. The women's race begins at 6 p.m., with the men going at 6:30 p.m.
