Lady Scots Hold Off Oglethorpe for Five-Set Win

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant volleyball team withstood multiple rallies from visiting Oglethorpe to come away with a 3-2 (25-15, 25-27, 25-16, 20-25, 15-10) victory on Wednesday night inside Barnes PE Center.

The win moves Covenant's record to 2-2 on the year, while Oglethorpe drops to 2-2 overall.

Ginny Moore totaled 13 kills and 23 digs in the victory, while Schuyler Moore had 38 assists and 10 digs. Lindsey Stephens added eight kills and Jessica Seehorn and Olivia Becker had seven kills apiece. In all, seven players had at least five kills for Covenant. Defensively, Hannah Stewart and Emily Moore had 12 digs apiece.

Covenant cruised to a first set victory after hitting .357 as a unit with 13 kills. The Lady Scots broke away from a tight score midway through the set to open up a 20-13 lead after a Seehorn ace. In the second set, Covenant was a point away from a 2-0 match lead, at 25-24, but Oglethorpe scored the final three points and a kill from Jacoby Sims tied the match at 1-1.

The Lady Scots responded with another strong set in the third. Covenant tallied 10 kills, but limited the visiting Stormy Petrels to a negative (-.114) hitting percentage to take a 2-1 match lead after winning the set 25-16. Again, Oglethorpe had a rally as the Stormy Petrels accumulated 16 kills in the fourth and held on for a 25-20 set win to setup a decisive fifth set.

In the fifth, Covenant fell behind 8-4 before coming up with a rally of its own. The Lady Scots scored six straight points, aided by three Chloe Storm aces along with kills from Stephens and Seehorn, to go ahead 10-8. Covenant was able to hold that lead and Emily Moore capped the night with an ace for the win.

As a team, Covenant hit .161 with 54 kills. Oglethorpe tallied 52 kills and had a .086 hitting percentage. 

Sims had a match-high 20 kills with 12 digs for Oglethorpe. Evan Furst added 14 kills and Santreece Stephens 10. Jordan Jones collected 41 assists, while Taryn North had 33 digs.

Covenant will travel to Atlanta to take part in the Emory Classic this weekend. The Lady Scots face DeSales on Friday at 7 p.m.
