LAGRANGE, Ga. -- The Covenant women's tennis team will play for a USA South Tournament championship. The Lady Scots took down North Carolina Wesleyan, 5-4, on Friday afternoon in the semifinal round of the tournament at LaGrange.
The No. 1 seed from the West, Covenant (14-7) advances to the championship against East No. 1 seed Methodist. The match is set to take place on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the McCluskey Tennis Center in LaGrange, Ga.
Covenant fought through a tough doubles portion of the match to grab a 2-1 lead. Claire Luger and Gracie Smith bested Nicole Halabi and Ana Diaz 8-4 at the No. 2 spot, while Annie DeLuca and Jennie Spielman were 8-3 winners at No. 3 to give Covenant the 2-1 lead.
In singles, Aly Hall earned a win at the No. 1 spot over N.C. Wesleyan's Florenica Sorrentino 6-1, 6-2. Luger gave Covenant its fourth point of the contest with 6-3, 6-1 win against Halabi. Spielman then sealed the victory with her 7-6 (6), 6-2 at No. 6 over Manuela Cano.
It is the second straight year that Covenant has advanced past N.C. Wesleyan in the semifinal round of tournament.
