MARYVILLE, Tenn. -- A strong third quarter from Maryville was enough to boost the host Scots over the Covenant women's basketball team, 65-49, in USA South action on Tuesday night inside Boydson Baird Gymnasium.

Bekah Walter had 20 points to lead Covenant (5-6, 1-1 USA South) as the Scots fell for the first time in conference action. Kaley Hallmark was the only other Scot in double figures as she tallied 13 points, 10 of which came in the first half. Hallmark and Walter had three assists each. Joanna Smith had a game-high 15 rebounds to go along with her four points, while Emma Grimes had six boards off the bench.

Covenant made three of its first four shots on the night to grab a 7-0 lead in the first two minutes of play. Hallmark started the scoring with a 3-pointer followed by a Jessica Bell layup and another Hallmark trey to give the Scots the seven-point edge.

The Scots would take their largest lead of the contest later in the first period after Walter buried a trey that made it 10-2 with 5:16 left. Covenant led 15-12 at the end of the first 10-minute segment.

Both teams struggled finding the range in the second, but Maryville would take a slim, 26-25, edge going into halftime after making just 31 percent from the field in the quarter.

Covenant got off to a great start in the third period as Walter scored six straight points to give the Scots a 31-26 lead. However, Maryville would outscore Covenant 21-3 the rest of the way in the quarter to surge ahead at 47-34. A triple from Madison Maples gave Maryville the 13-point lead late in the quarter. Maryville would lead by double digits the rest of the way.

After being limited offensively in the first two quarters, Maryville (7-6, 3-0 USA South) had three players score in double figures with Lauren Biliter and Rachel Hawn scoring 16 apiece. Hawn just missed a double-double with her nine rebounds. Maples added 13 points, while Amber Hudgens and Elsa Eckenrod had eight each.
