Sears and Woodward Lead Covenant Basketball Teams in GSAC Honors
LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Great South Athletic Conference announced its men's and women's basketball All-Conference awards on Thursday afternoon. Junior Callum Sears was recognized as an All-Conference player as well as an All-Academic performer on the men's side, while Morgan Woodward took All-Freshman and Sportsmanship honors on the women's side.
Sears led Covenant in scoring with 13.5 points per game and pulled down an average of 3.2 rebounds per game. The junior also ranked fifth overall in the conference in scoring average. Colton McGriff was also recognized as an All-Freshman player. The Birmingham, Ala., native scored 8.8 points per game while grabbing 5.2 rebounds per contest. The freshman has logged a lot of minutes this season as his 22.1 minutes per game places him third on the team.
Senior Zarome Lakey took the Sportsmanship award for Covenant. The Columbus, Ga., resident started 16 games for the Scots this season and averaged 4.6 points per game and 3.0 rebounds per game.
Jon DeVries, Nate Frierson, and Sears were also honored for their hard work in the classroom as they were named to the All-Academic team. In order to be placed on the All-Academic team, players must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.25.
On the women's side, Woodward was honored not only on the All-Freshman team, but also was recognized as the Sportsmanship award winner for Covenant. Playing point guard, Woodward has played in all 24 games this season and started 20 of them. The freshman from Acworth, Ga., has contributed 5.0 points per game, 3.8 rebounds per game, and leads Covenant with 2.3 assists per game. She is also tied for the team-lead in steals with 35 on the season.
Sophomore Jessie Blankenship, junior Jessica Chittenden, senior Hannah Craft, sophomore Anna Kline, freshman Meagan Kreisel, and senior Erica Vaughn were all placed on the All-Academic team.
