SEWANEE, Tenn. -- Lilly Smith won two events with program record times and helped set a third program mark to lead the Covenant track and field teams at the Mountain Laurel Invitational on Friday evening at Sewanee.
The women's team placed sixth overall in the event with 45 points, while the men placed seventh with 34 points.
Smith had a hand in 26 points accumulated by Covenant on the women's side. The junior won the 1500 meter run with her personal and program record time of 4:54.66, beating her own program record pace by more than a second. In the 3000 meter, Smith again took first place as she came in at 10:57.56. It was the first time Covenant had competed in the 3000 meter run in the outdoor season in the program's two-year history.
However, Smith was not done yet. She joined Hannah Hennigh, Virginia Kay Roberts, and Abigail Wallace to combine for a time of 4:27.40 in the 4x400 relay, good for third overall and for six points. That time also set a season-best time.
Relays were a strong point for Covenant. Along with the 4x400, Covenant set a program mark in the 4x100 with a time of 54.12 that was accomplished by Hennigh, Roberts, Gracie Holbrook, and Wallace. The mark was good for fifth overall in the event.
The women's side also saw a program record fall in the 3000 meter steeplechase as Michelann Settle finished in 12:37.15 and placed third overall.
In the 3000 meter run that Smith won, Hannah Samuels came in sixth with her time of 11:32.10 to set a personal best. Roberts set a personal record in the 400 meter with her time of 1:06.98 and finished eighth, and also had a personal best in the 200 at 29.77. Margaret Fitch had a personal best time in the 800 at 2:36.39, while placing first in her section and sixth overall. Hennigh had a season-best time in the 200 meter at 27.92.
The men's side saw two program records fall on the night. Michael Rawlings upped his own program mark in the shot put as his attempt went 8.38 meters. Rawlings would also place sixth in the javelin as his long throw was 41.50 meters. In the 800 meter, Leif Le Mahieu broke his own program mark with a time of 2:02.98 to place fourth in the event.
Le Mahieu was also strong in the 1500 as he set a personal best time at 4:17.05 to place eighth, while Micaiah Allison was ninth with a personal best time of 4:20.33. In the 3000 meter run, Caleb Aikens came in fifth at 9:10.59 and Matt Seitz was seventh at 9:24.37.
In sprint events, Ari Zorns was fifth overall in the 100 meter dash at 11.51 seconds and Zorns placed 11th overall in the 200 meter at 23.78. William Bryan came in at 50.56 in the 400 meter and placed third, while Tristan Dunlavy was eighth with his time of 51.57.
Covenant will be off until Friday, April 27 when it begins the two-day Atlantic Independent Championships in Berea, Ky.
