LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Covenant softball junior catcher Shannon Schmitt has been voted to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District team, announced the organization on Thursday.
Schmitt becomes the first player in program history to earn the honor that recognizes strong athletic and academic ability. She is also the first Covenant student-athlete to be honored in the 2016-17 academic year. Schmitt will now be entered into the Academic All-America voting which begins next week.
In order to be nominated for the award, student-athletes must have a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or higher and be a significant contributor to their team. The ballot is then voted on by various Sports Information personnel within the district.
Schmitt, a junior from Clermont, Fla., is majoring in Biology with a minor in Mathematics. She is a two-time USA South All-Academic honoree and was an NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete in 2015. Schmitt has earned Dean's List and Athletic Honor Roll in all five semesters at Covenant.
On the field in 2017, Schmitt started all 39 games and batted .367 with 13 RBIs and 26 runs scored helping Covenant to a 22-17 record. Her 44 total hits were second-best on the team while she collected 11 multi-hit games, including four three-hit contests. Defensively, Schmitt caught six baserunners attempting to steal on the year.
Schmitt was one of two players from the USA South to be honored with an Academic All-District selection, joining Averett's Jessica Long.
