MACON, Ga. -- The Covenant softball team scored runs in bunches and had dominating pitching performances in both games to lead to a sweep of Wesleyan on Saturday in Macon. The Lady Scots won game one 7-0 before taking game two 8-0 in five innings.
Covenant (4-0) allowed just four hits on the day and scored all 15 of its runs across three innings in the two games combined.
GAME ONE: Covenant 7, Wesleyan 0
Covenant used a seven-run third inning and a strong effort in the circle from three different pitchers to take game one 7-0.
The big inning was the third as the Lady Scots scored seven runs on six hits in the frame. Kaitlyn Sirmons and Erika Mast singled to leadoff the inning before back-to-back RBI singles from Madalyn Ames and Shade Epes to make it 2-0. Later in the inning, Carsyn Stone worked a bases loaded walk before Sirmons plated two with a single.
That was all the pitching of Stone, Tyler Epes and Joni Johnson needed. Stone started and went three innings allowing just one hit. Epes (1-0) gets the win as she tossed the middle three innings and gave up two hits. Johnson worked a scoreless seventh to complete the win.
Valerie Clower (0-1) picked up the loss for the host Wolves as she went seven innings and allowed four earned runs.
GAME TWO: Covenant 8, Wesleyan 0
In game two, Covenant scored five runs in the fourth and three in the fifth to pull away for an 8- win in five innings and a doubleheader sweep.
Cris Gant (1-0) started and went four innings allowing just one hit with four strikeouts. Sarah Huskey came on to work a perfect fifth inning as the Lady Scots combined to surrender just one hit in the contest.
It was a scoreless game until the fourth when Covenant scored five runs. Jordan Brett doubled home Schmitt and later scored on a passed ball to make it 2-0. Two batters later, Sirmons came through again with a two-run single that enabled Jami Johnson and Kat Andrews to score. Mast followed with an RBI single to cap the inning and give the Lady Scots a 5-0 lead.
In the fifth, a Wesleyan error allowed both Brett and Schmitt to score before Sirmons delivered a run-scoring single that plated Grover to make it 8-0.
Sirmons finished 2-for-3 with a run scored and three RBIs in the win. Schmitt went 3-for-3 with two runs and Brett added two hits in three at-bats.
Nicole Wilson (0-1) allowed five earned runs to pick up the loss for Wesleyan.
Covenant will host nationally-ranked Birmingham Southern on Tuesday for a doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
