Men's Cross Country Picked as Favorite in USA South Preseason Poll

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The Covenant men's cross country team, under fourth-year head coach Katie Stanford, has been picked as the favorite to win the USA South by the league's head coaches in the annual preseason poll.

The Scots claimed the USA South crown a season ago, marking the first time any Covenant athletic program had officially won a conference championship at the NCAA Division III level.

Covenant garnered four of the eight first place votes and 46 total points overall to capture the top spot. Maryville gained three first place votes and 43 points to come in second, while Piedmont had the final first place tally and 38 overall points. Methodist, Averett, LaGrange, Ferrum and William Peace concluded the poll.

The Scots return seven runners from last season's team that won three meets. Leading the team this year are seniors, and USA South All-Conference performers from a year ago, Stephen Dillon and Jack Williams.

The USA South Championships will once again be held in Greensboro, North Carolina on Saturday, Nov. 1.

The season gets underway on Friday, Aug. 29 with the Mountaintop Invitational on Lookout Mountain. The women's race begins at 6 p.m., with the men going at 6:30 p.m.
