LAGRANGE, Ga. -- The No. 1-seeded Covenant men's tennis team fell in the semifinal round of the USA South Tournament to No. 2 seed Averett, 6-3, on Friday in LaGrange.
The Scots end the year with a 12-10 overall record. The 12 wins sets a single-season program record. Averett (12-5) moves on to the USA South Tournament championship match on Saturday against N.C. Wesleyan.
The Scots were defeated in all three doubles matches, despite close matches, to fall behind 3-0. Logan Hull and Micah Fox came close to gaining a point for Covenant but ultimately fell 8-6 to James Wright and Nicolas Yanes. Matthew Harvie and Chris Cox fell to regionally-ranked Caius Blomqvist Lauri Soome at the No. 1 doubles spot, 8-4, while Connor Shimmel and Trey Wood fell to Abdugani Ganiev and Nicolas Quevedo 8-4.
In singles play, Covenant would take the top three spots. Harvie, who moved up to No. 24 in the latest ITA Atlantic South region rankings, bested Blomqvist 6-0, 6-4 at the No. 1 position. Cox took down Soome, the USA South Rookie of the Year, in three sets, 7-6 (7), 5-7, 12-10 at the second spot. Hull also collected a win as he took a 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 3 position over Wright.
