LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- The Covenant men's tennis team honored its lone senior, Connor Shimmel, before the match and then took down Berea 9-0 on Saturday afternoon at the Covenant Tennis Complex.
The win moves the Scots back to .500 on the year at 9-9 overall. Covenant will finish the regular season with three matches next week.
Shimmel helped Covenant to a 3-0 lead after doubles as he and Trey Wood combined for an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles. Matthew Harvie and Chris Cox were 8-0 winners at the top spot, while Logan Hull and Micah Fox won 8-0 in their match at No. 2.
Covenant then took care of business against Berea (0-9) in singles play. Cox and Hull won by identical 6-1, 6-0 scores at the Nos. 1 and 2 spots, respectively. Ben Tonkel won in three sets at the third position 7-6 (5), 2-6, 1-0 (10-7). Wood was a 6-0, 6-1 winner at the fourth position and Trey Wetjen took a 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 5. Tristian Smallwood completed the sweep with a 7-5, 6-0 win at No. 6.
Shimmel, a senior from Carol Stream, Ill., has accumulated 18 doubles victories during his four-year career and was honored for his contributions and dedication to the program before the match on Saturday.
Covenant hosts Maryville on Wednesday at 4 p.m. on Lookout Mountain in the team's final home regular season match.
