Men's Tennis Wins USA South Opener

MARYVILLE, Tenn. -- Backed by two victories from freshmen Micah Fox and Logan Hull, the Covenant men's tennis team defeated Maryville 7-2 on Thursday afternoon in the USA South opener.

Covenant (4-6, 1-0 USA South) had not played since March 4, but took an early lead in doubles play and then eased past host Maryville (2-5, 0-3 USA South). The win marks the second time in the last three years that Covenant has won its league opener.

Fox and Hull helped Covenant grab a 3-0 lead in doubles play. The tandem took an 8-0 win at the No. 2 spot over Charles Russell and Mateus Coling. The No. 1 duo of Matthew Harvie and Chris Cox took an 8-1 win over Maryville's Daniel Silva and Marcos Herrero, while Connor Shimmel and Trey Wood were 8-2 winners at No. 3 over Wes Bloeme and Trevor Perry.

Hull moved up to the No. 1 singles spot in the lineup and picked up a 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 win over Herrero. Fox also moved up a couple of spots in the order and earned a straight set win over Russell at the No. 2 position. 

Fellow freshmen Ben Tonkel and Trey Wetjen were also winners in singles competition. Tonkel won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 4 over Coling, while Wetjen was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Perry at the No. 5 spot.

UP NEXT

Covenant will play a pair of home matches on Saturday. The Scots host LaGrange at 10:30 a.m., before playing Emory & Henry at 2:30 p.m. at the Covenant Tennis Complex.
