Men's Soccer Blanked by Eastern Mennonite

MARYVILLE, Tenn. -- The Covenant men's soccer team suffered its second consecutive loss to open the season as Eastern Mennonite scored two goals in the second half to pull away for a 2-0 victory in the finale of the Maryville Invitational on Saturday afternoon.

Covenant drops to 0-2 on the year, while Eastern Mennonite goes to 1-1. It was just the third all-time meeting between the programs, and the first since Covenant took a 3-0 win in the 1979 season.

With the match scoreless through the first 75-plus minutes, Eastern Mennonite got the eventual game-winner off the foot of Juan Luna in the 77th minute, assisted by Daniel Obour. The Royals would tack on another score in the 87th minute when Jesus Trejo found the back of the net, from Caleb Lasrado, to make it 2-0.

Covenant was outshot 10-7 on the afternoon. Anthony Buzzeo and Seth Robinson took the only shots that landed on target, while Buzzeo and Jack Allen had two shots apiece. Jonathan Crossman made six saves on the afternoon in a full 90 minutes at the net. 

Eastern Mennonite keeper Cody Martin made two saves, while Obour led the Royals in shots with three.

Covenant will host Sewanee on Sept. 6 at Scotland Yard in the home opener. Match time is set for 7:30 p.m.
