Covenant Takes Highland Cup Showdown, 2-0
MARYVILLE, Tenn. -- Garrison Dale had two second half goals to lead visiting Covenant past the Maryville Scots 2-0 on a chilly, early autumn night in Maryville on Tuesday. The win gives the Covenant Scots the Highland Cup, an award that goes to the winner of the Scots vs. Scots matchup, for the first time since its inception.
With the win, Covenant also moves to .500 for the first time this season at 6-6. Maryville drops to 3-6-1 on the year.
After a scoreless first half, which saw just eight shots taken combined, Dale managed to score both goals in a span of 15 minutes. Dale's first goal came off a pass from Joel Friesen and was headed into the net from just a few yards out in the 63rd minute to give Covenant a 1-0 lead.
Dale soon scored his second goal of the night in the 78th minute. The junior laced the shot from beyond the box on the left side into the upper right corner of the net to give the visiting Scots a 2-0 advantage. Dale currently leads Covenant in goals with four for the season.
Covenant led Maryville in shots 13-10. Dale led Covenant with four shots on goal. Matt Hudnut took two shots on goal, while Ian Meredith and Friesen each had one apiece. Maryville had just four shots on net for the night as Covenant keeper Shuler Polk managed to save all four. Maryville keeper Ben Munger made six saves on the night.
Covenant will return for their homecoming match against Tennessee Temple on Saturday, October 6th. The game is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at Scotland Yard and fireworks will follow shortly after.
