Hawkins' 71 Leads Golf in Final Round of USA South Tournament

LAGRANGE, Ga. -- Freshman Nathan Hawkins fired a 1-under, 71 to lead the Covenant men's golf team in the final round of the USA South Tournament on Saturday at Highland Country Club in LaGrange.

The Scots finished ninth in the field, but posted a team score of 312 on Saturday's final round. No. 4-ranked Methodist took home the team title with a 288 in the final round and finished the event with an 871. Greensboro and Huntingdon rounded out the top three teams in the event.

Hawkins' strong final round placed him in a tie for 13th overall at 224 (79-74-71). The 71 set a career-best for the freshman and was tied for the third-lowest round in the entire field on Saturday. Hawkins carded three birdies in the final round, with two of those coming on the back nine. 

Covenant also got a strong finish from Josh Wall as he scored a 76 in the round. Alan Craig posted an 82, while Marshall Kent had an 83 in the finale.

LaGrange's Logan Lanier was the medalist as he finished with a 7-under, 209 for the tournament. Stephen Shepherd of Huntingdon place second at 4-under, while Greensboro's Levi Grogan and Luke Grogan, N.C. Wesleyan's Mariano Silvestri and Craig Decato of Methodist tied for third at even-par.
