This week's male Thrive Covenant Athlete of the Week, for the period ending April 22, 2017, is baseball junior Joel Johnson.

Johnson, a junior from Alingsas, Sweden, batted .500 (5-for-10) with four runs, a home run and three RBIs on the week. The junior went 2-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI in a loss at Carson-Newman on April 19, then went a combined 3-for-5 with three runs, a double and a home run with two RBIs in a doubleheader split with Methodist on April 22. Johnson ended the year with six straight RBI games.

Week 1 (Aug. 29-Sept. 3, 2016)

Micah Sneller - Cross Country

Sneller, a sophomore from Lancaster, Pa., paced the Scots to a second place finish at the Mountaintop Invitational with a personal best time of 18:30 in the 5k event. Sneller's time was good for 10th overall in the race.

Week 2 (Sept. 5-10, 2016)

Micah Sneller - Cross Country

Sneller, a sophomore from Lancaster, Pa., led the Scots once again this time at the UTC PowerAde Invitational where he set a personal best in the 5k with a time of 17:38. Sneller finished 53rd among Division I and Division III runners in the event. The time was 52 seconds faster than his previous best mark, set last week at the Mountaintop Invitational.

Week 3 (Sept. 12-17, 2016)

Carl Simakoff - Soccer

Simakoff, a sophomore from St. Louis, Mo., scored twice on the week, including the game-winner in Covenant's 1-0 win over William Peace. The sophomore collected his first goal of the year in Friday's 3-2 loss to Averett. He then scored the game-winner in Saturday's match vs. William Peace on a header off a set piece from Caleb Allen late in the first half.

Week 4 (Sept. 19-24, 2016)

Marshall Kent - Golf

Kent, a sophomore from Milton, Ga., earned his highest-ever finish in a tournament as he placed in a tie for second at the Piedmont Fall Invitational. The sophomore shot a career-best 2-under 70 in the first round before posting a 77 in the final round for a two-day score of 147, a career-low for a 36-hole tournament. Kent earned All-Tournament honors for a second consecutive year at the Piedmont Fall Invitational.

Week 5 (Sept. 25-Oct. 1, 2016)

Jesse Riggs - Soccer

Riggs, a freshman from Chesapeake, Va., scored two goals on the week to lead the Scots. Riggs gave Covenant a 1-0 lead in the second half of a 2-1 overtime loss at Birmingham Southern, then scored the lone tally in a 4-1 loss at Maryville. Riggs has scored in three of the last four matches and leads the team with four goals.

Week 6 (Oct. 3-8, 2016)

Carl Simakoff - Soccer

Simakoff, a sophomore from St. Louis, Mo., scored five goals on the week to lead Covenant to a 2-0-1 record. The sophomore scored twice in the Scots' 6-1 win over Huntingdon on Friday, before recording his first career hat trick in a 6-1 victory over LaGrange on Saturday. Simakoff now leads the team with seven goals on the year.

Week 7 (Oct. 10-15, 2016)

Micah Sneller - Cross Country

Sneller, a sophomore from Lancaster, Pa., paced the Scots at the Berry Invitational with a personal record time of 27:57.7 in the 8k. The time placed Sneller 65th overall, out of 189 total runners, and helped Covenant to a 13th place finish in the event.

Week 8 (Oct. 17-22, 2016)

Will Mayfield - Golf

Mayfield, a freshman from Alpharetta, Ga., tied for 45th overall at the Chick-fil-A Collegiate Invitational last week. The freshman carded a tournament score of 156, which tied his season-best, following a first round score of 79 and a final round 77. In the final round, Mayfield had three birdies on the front nine on his way to a 77.

Week 9 (Oct. 24-29, 2016)

Micah Sneller - Cross Country

Sneller, a sophomore from Lancaster, Pa., led Covenant at the USA South Cross Country Championships with a fourth place finish. The sophomore finished the 8k course in a time of 28:52 to help Covenant to a second place finish in the event. Sneller's finish earned him a spot on the All-USA South first team for a second consecutive season.

Week 10 (Oct. 31-Nov. 5, 2016)

Nathan Hawkins - Golf

Hawkins, a freshman from Lexington, N.C., paced the men's golf team at the Pinnacle Trust Invitational with his sixth place finish. The freshman had a tournament score of 160 after a first round 78 followed by a final round 82. 

Week 11 (Nov. 7-12, 2016)

Micah Sneller - Cross Country

Sneller, a sophomore from Lancaster, Pa., led the Scots at the NCAA South/Southeast Region meet on Saturday. The sophomore finished the 8k in a time of 28:25 for a 110th place finish overall and help Covenant to 23rd.

Week 12 (Nov. 14-19, 2016)

Berto Dryden - Basketball

Dryden, a junior from Brooklyn, N.Y., averaged 17.3 points, 2.7 assists, 2.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game to help Covenant to a 2-1 record. The junior had a team-high 19 points on 7-of-13 shooting and had the game-clinching steal and layup in a 74-70 win over No. 15 Emory on Tuesday. He then had 13 points, five assists and four steals in a 100-67 victory over Dallas on Friday. In an 89-74 loss to Emory & Henry on Saturday, Dryden totaled 20 points and two assists.

Week 13 (Nov. 21-26, 2016)

Patjo Twagirayezu - Basketball

Twagirayezu, a junior from Kigali, Rwanda, led Covenant to a 68-65 win at Birmingham Southern with a career-high 24 points last Tuesday. The junior went 11-of-17 from the field and had a game-sealing steal and layup in the final seconds. Twagirayezu also collected three rebounds, three assists and three steals in the win.

Week 14 (Nov. 28-Dec. 3, 2016)

Z Arima - Basketball

Arima, a senior from Herriman, Utah, scored a career-high 14 points in Covenant's 62-60 loss at Sewanee last Tuesday. The senior went 5-of-7 from the field and a perfect 3-for-3 from behind the 3-point line. Arima also collected two rebounds and a steal while making his second start of the season.

Week 15 (Dec. 5-10, 2016)

Z Arima - Basketball

Arima, a senior from Herriman, Utah, averaged 16.7 points, shot 53.8 percent from 3-point land, and grabbed 4.3 rebounds on the week. The senior had 14 points, eight rebounds, one assist and one steal in a 78-64 win over Oglethorpe on Tuesday. In a 93-62 loss at No. 7 Whitworth on Friday night, Arima had 10 points and three rebounds. He then had a career-high 26 points on 10-of-16 shooting with five 3-pointers to go along with two rebounds and an assist in a 101-85 loss at No. 4 Whitman on Saturday.

Week 16 (Dec. 12-17, 2016)

Patjo Twagirayezu - Basketball

Twagirayezu, a junior from Kigali, Rwanda, scored 14 points on 7-of-11 shooting in Covenant's USA South loss at Ferrum on Saturday. The junior also added four rebounds and three steals in the 75-62 defeat. Twagirayezu has scored in double figures in five of Covenant's nine games this season.

Week 17 (Dec. 26-31, 2016)

Caleb Haynes - Basketball

Haynes, a freshman from Section, Ala., averaged 11.0 points, eight rebounds and one assist per game to help Covenant to a 2-0 week. The freshman scored a season and career-high 14 points on 7-of-8 shooting with eight rebounds, one assist and one block in a 73-60 win at Millsaps on Friday. Haynes then totaled eight points and eight boards with an assist and steal in a 78-70 win at Belhaven on Saturday.

Week 18 (Jan. 2-7, 2017)

Berto Dryden - Basketball

Dryden, a junior from Brooklyn, N.Y., scored a career-high 23 points in Covenant's 93-82 overtime victory over LaGrange on Friday. The junior went a perfect 12-for-12 at the free throw line while also dishing out a career-high tying seven assists to go along with three rebounds in the USA South win. 

Week 19 (Jan. 9-14, 2017)

Berto Dryden - Basketball

Dryden, a junior from Brooklyn, N.Y., averaged 16.3 points, 2.3 assists and 3.0 rebounds per game on the week. The junior scored a new career-high 28 points with four rebounds and four assists in an 83-75 loss to Maryville last week. He then had 10 points, two rebounds and two assists in a loss at Methodist before scoring 11 points with three rebounds in a loss to Greensboro.

Week 20 (Jan. 16-21, 2017)

Bailey Spragg - Basketball

Spragg, a sophomore from Windermere, Fla., averaged 16.5 points and 5.5 rebounds per game to help Covenant to a 1-1 week. The sophomore scored a career-high 19 points with four rebounds and two steals in a 59-56 loss to Piedmont last Tuesday. Spragg then scored 14 points with seven rebounds and two assists in a 66-61 comeback win at LaGrange on Saturday.

Week 21 (Jan. 23-28, 2017)

Patjo Twagirayezu - Basketball

Twagirayezu, a junior from Kigali, Rwanda, posted 23.0 points, while shooting 65.6 percent from the field, and 8.0 rebounds per game on the week. The junior had a double-double with 20 points and a career-high 13 rebounds in a 59-56 loss to North Carolina Wesleyan on Friday. Twagirayezu then scored a career-high 26 points on 12-of-20 shooting with three rebounds in an 84-82 overtime win against William Peace on Saturday.

Week 22 (Jan. 30-Feb. 4, 2017)

Patjo Twagirayezu - Basketball

Twagirayezu, a junior from Kigali, Rwanda, averaged 17.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per game to help Covenant to a 2-0 week. The junior had six points and six rebounds in a 73-56 win over Sewanee on Tuesday before scoring a career-high 28 points with six rebounds in an 81-70 victory over Huntingdon on Thursday.

Week 23 (Feb. 6-11, 2017)

Z Arima - Basketball

Arima, a senior from Herriman, Utah, averaged 18.5 points, while shooting 63.6 percent from 3-point land, with 4.5 rebounds to help Covenant to a 2-0 week. The senior tied a career-high with 26 points and five 3-pointers in an 81-80 win at Huntingdon last Wednesday. He then had 11 points and seven rebounds in a 67-63 win over Averett on Saturday.

Week 24 (Feb. 13-18, 2017)

Will Portlock - Basketball

Portlock, a senior from Winter Haven, Fla., averaged 17.5 points, 3.5 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 1.5 steals in Covenant's 1-1 week. The senior scored a career-high 18 points to go with three rebounds and four assists in an 83-76 loss at Maryville. He then scored 17 points with four rebounds, five assists and two steals in a 91-64 win over Piedmont that clinched a spot in the USA South Tournament for the Scots.

Week 25 (Feb. 20-25, 2017)

Matthew Harvie - Tennis

Harvie, a junior from Grayson, Ga., went 2-0 in singles play and 2-1 in doubles to lead Covenant. The junior defeated Millsaps' Diego Marti-Vertiz 6-3, 6-4 on Friday at No. 1 singles and then Rhodes' Albert Vacheron in three sets 6-2, 2-6, 13-11 on Saturday. Harvie and Chris Cox combined for a 2-1 record at the top doubles spot with an 8-6 win over Rhodes' Andrew Morton and Sean Hogan on Saturday before besting Karthik Garimella and Kristian Lenser of Hendrix 8-1.

Week 26 (Feb. 27-March 4, 2017)

Matt Reitz - Baseball

Reitz, a sophomore from Jacksonville, Fla., tossed a complete-game four-hitter with 10 strikeouts in Covenant's 3-2 win over Maryville on Friday. The sophomore struck out a career-high 10 batters and threw his first career nine-inning complete-game. Reitz scattered four hits and allowed one earned run with a walk in the victory.

Week 27 (March 6-11, 2017)

Julien Amorelli - Baseball

Amorelli, a senior from Bayside, N.Y., hit .556 (5-for-9) with two runs, an RBI and a walk on the week to lead Covenant. The senior went a combined 4-for-5 with a walk and two runs scored in a pair of losses at N.C. Wesleyan on Friday before going 1-for-4 with an RBI in the series finale on Saturday. 

Week 28 (March 13-18, 2017)

Joel Johnson - Baseball

Johnson, a junior from Alingsas, Sweden, batted .455 (5-for-11) with a home run, six RBIs and two runs scored in a series win over No. 1 Emory. The senior went 1-for-4 in a game one loss on Friday befre going a combined 4-for-7 with a home run, six RBIs and two runs scored in a doubleheader sweep on Saturday. Johnson had three RBIs in each of the wins on Saturday.

Week 29 (March 20-25, 2017)

Matthew Harvie - Tennis

Harvie, a junior from Grayson, Ga., went 3-0 in singles and 2-1 in doubles at the No. 1 spot in both on the week for the Scots. In singles, Harvie took a three-set victory over Piedmont's Nathan Metzger on Wednesday and then won two matches on Saturday against opponents from Huntingdon and Berry. He teamed with Chris Cox at No. 1 doubles for wins over Piedmont and Huntingdon.

Week 30 (March 27-April 1, 2017)

Alex Kerr - Baseball

Kerr, a senior from Lithia, Fla., batted .500 (5-for-10) with two home runs, eight RBIs and four runs scored on the week. The senior did all of his damage in a series victory over USA South foe Huntingdon as he went 5-for-8 with two homers and eight RBIs in the three games. Kerr was 2-for-2 with five RBIs and a grand slam in a 9-4 game one win, while combining to go 3-for-6 with a homer, three runs and three RBIs in a doubleheader split on Saturday. In Saturday's series finale, Kerr hit a go-ahead home run in the eighth inning.

Week 31 (April 3-8, 2017)

Kyle Delk - Track & Field

Delk, a junior from Orlando, Fla., led Covenant to its best team performance of the year over the weekend at Berry. The junior set a person record in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.49. He also tallied points for Covenant in field events as he placed seventh in the long jump and 6.00 meters, and third in the high jump at 1.82 meters. Delk was also part of the 4x100 team, along with Berto Dryden, Mason Gregoire and Ari Zorns, that set a season-best time of 44.01.

Week 32 (April 10-15, 2017)

Nathan Hawkins - Golf

Hawkins, a freshman from Lexington, N.C., finished 13th at the USA South Tournament last week. The freshman improved his score each day and carded a 1-under, 71 in the final round on Saturday, the third-best round of any player in the round. Hawkins ended the 54-hole tournament with a 224 (79-74-71).

Week 33 (April 17-22, 2017)
