Five Scots named All-Conference Honorable Mention

Five Covenant College baseball players were named honorable mentions to the AAC All-Conference Team.

Sophomore catcher Jared Carlson posted a team high batting average of .410 and drove in 27 runs.

The AAC on Monday announced the individual Champions of Character awards.

Baseball Has Seven Players Make the AAC All-Academic Team

Seven members of Covenant College's Baseball Team have been named to the 2009 AAC All-Academic Team. This is the third time that senior catcher Colby Duckett of Dalton, Georgia has received the honor. Also repeating as All-Academic selections are junior outfielder Thomas O'Ban of Tacoma, Washington and senior catcher Micah Reynolds of Knoxville, Tennessee.

Roy Heintz stepping down at Covenant College

Lookout Mountain, GA - After seven years at Covenant College, Roy Heintz is resigning as the women's basketball coach and director of athletics to pursue other coaching opportunities. Heintz, who came to Covenant from Florida State University where he served as an assistant coach, has a strong desire to return to the NCAA Division I ranks as an assistant or the Division II level as a head coach.

Kyle Taylor announced as Covenant's Men's Basketball Coach

Lookout Mountain, GA - Kyle Taylor, the top assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Minnesota State-Moorhead, has been named the new men's basketball coach at Covenant College. Taylor replaces Nathan Kirkpatrick who stepped down this spring to return to the University of Georgia to pursue his doctoral degree.

Covenant Hosts AAC Tennis Tournament, Lady Scots Finish Second and Scots Third

The Lady Scots softball team got started early today with a 5-1 win over Bluefield College in the opening game of the AAC tournament today in Kingsport TN. The win moved the Lady Scots into the winners bracket of the tournament and a matchup with the #1 Seed Milligan College. The Scots dug in and behind great team defense shocked Milligan College 1-0 to send Milligan into the loser bracket and propelled the Lady Scots into a winners bracket matchup against Virginia Intermont tomorrow at 5:00 PM.

On Friday night's game, the Scots started out well taking the lead in the early innings. In the second inning, Carlson singled, courtesy runner Hagopian stole second base and then advanced to third on a wild back-pick. Hogan then came through with the sac fly to score Hagopian. In the third inning, Whitehead led things off with a hit by pitch. He then advanced to third base on a two base throwing error.

The rained soaked Fairfield Glade resort couldn't dampen the spirits of Scots golfer, Jordan Agate on the opening round of the Conference Tournament in Crossville, Tennessee. Agate opened the tournament with a solid 81, one shot behind co-leaders from Tennessee Wesleyan, Megan Cox and Natalie Foster. Agate and Cox played together and were neck and neck the entire day until Jordan misfired a tee shot on the par 5 16th hole.....Out of Bounds. In the series opening game on Friday night, the Bulldogs starting pitcher allowed the Scots only two runs off five hits: Carlson (1-3), Newton (1-3), Whitehead, (2-3), and Hogan (1-4, 2 RBI double). The Scots connected for those two runs in the fourth inning on a two out rally. Carlson started it off by drawing a walk followed by Newton's single to move him over.

Freshman Tyler Smith pitched 6 strong innings spreading around 8 hits over the 6 innings, allowing only 3 runs while the Scots had 13 hits, scored 7 runs in the same 6 inning stretch. Scots David Spencer edges fellow Scot Dave Wilkinson in playoff in Kentucky

The Covenant golf team made quite a name for themselves in Pineville, Kentucky this past Monday and Tuesday as they nearly defeated the entire AAC competition with only 4 players in the 5 player event. The two day event at Wasiota Winds Golf Club ended with three individuals tied for low score, two of which were our Scots, David Spencer and Dave Wilkinson.

It may have been called the "Spring Invitational", but it was far from Spring weather in Niota, Tennessee on the second day of the 36 hole event at Springbrook Country Club. The Appalachian Conference girls teed off on day 2 to wintry weather with snow flakes not quite the size of golf balls falling just a few minutes after getting on the course.

On a sunny spring afternoon, the Scots came out to have fun playing the game of baseball. Although they dropped the first game 1-11, there were several highlights to note. At the plate, went 1-3 (bunt single), Parker Cline, went 2-3 (double, single), and Ty McTier went 1-2 (single). On the mound, Luke Furuto went 3.2 innings with five strikeouts.

The windy winter air blew briskly on Springbrook Country Club in Niota, Tennessee today. Megan Cox, Tennessee Wesleyan all conference senior shot a solid 80 under the cool cloud cover and was three shot ahead of her teammate, Natalie Foster. Scots freshman, Jordan Agate, fired an 88 after missing short putts on her final two holes.

The men's tennis team pulled out their first close match of the season 5-4 against University of the Cumberlands.

The Scots started out strong by winning #1 and #2 doubles handily and then lost at #3 doubles. Matches were put on in random order due to the weather and court space so #4 Ryan Bernardez lost to a good player first making the score 2-2.

The Covenant Tennis teams went on the road this past weekend for 2 conference matches and were successful in winning both.

The first match was against Milligan College where the men handled there opponents easily winning 8-1. The women started out with a nice lead by winning all three doubles matches to go up 3-0.

Reeder Cup receives great reviews

Covenant College hosted the Reeder Cup this past Monday and Tuesday and the word on the course on Tuesday afternoon was, "we will be back". "We are very pleased with how the tournament went this year," remarked coach Schreiner. "We had 9 men's teams and 5 women's teams, 71 competing golfers, and they were very appreciative to me personally and the Lookout Mountain golf club. Many coaches and players remarked that it is the best tournament they have played in, not just this year, but ever!" said the Scots coach.

The Lady Scots battled Bluefield College and came out on top with two wins 5-4 and 8-5. The first game was a fight from the beginning to the end of eight innnings with the Lady Scots taking the lead in the top of the eighth with a hit by Christine Core which ended up plating the game winning run. Chelsea Krafft came in relief to pitch the last two innings and was able to ward off the bats of Bluefield cCllege, leading the Scots to a 5-4 victory.

Covenant sweeps Virginia Intermont Cobras (12-0, 13-2, 15-2)

On a warm spring afternoon, the Scots put it all together for a trouncing 12-0 victory over the Cobras. The bats came out swinging from the first pitch: Jason Pope went 3-5 (2 doubles), Justin Greer and Ty McTier both went 1-1, Taylor Oldham went 2-4 (2 RBI), Jared Carlson went 4-4 (2 RBI), and Thomas O'Ban and Harrison Fisher both went 1-3.

Covenant College will host the 2nd Annual Reeder Cup next week, March 30-31, at the Lookout Mountain Golf Club. The Scots will host 17 teams in the two day event, 11 men's teams and 6 women's teams.

"We are excited about this event as it shows off the great course that we are privileged to play daily as well as gives us an opportunity to play in front of the hometown fans," remarked Scots coach Tom Schreiner.

Jordan Agate may be the only female Covenant golfer competing for the Lady Scots, but she is carrying the banner high. Last week in Rutledge, Georgia, Jordan shot rounds of 92-89 to finish 11th individually in the field boasting 34 women golfers.

Covenant College Names New Men's Soccer Coach

Lookout Mountain, GA - Covenant College tapped one of its own to be its new men's soccer coach, announcing former Scot Nathan Pifer as its new head coach today. Pifer has earned championship success as a head coach at both the intercollegiate and interscholastic levels.

Dave Wilkinson earns medalist honors in Rutledge, Georgia

Dave Wilkinson was the tournament medalist at the Creek at Hard Labor State Park in the Scots second tournament of the Spring season. Wilkinson recorded back to back 72's for an even par tournament score of 144, edging out Clifton Barton of Piedmont by one stroke. The Scots finished 3rd overall in the team standings missing second place by a single stroke.
