Covenant's Mission
The focus of Covenant College is found in its motto, based on Colossians 1:18: "In all things Christ preeminent". Acknowledging Christ as the creator of all things, as the redeemer of people fallen into sin, as the touchstone of all truth, and as the sovereign ruler over all areas of life, the college strives to discern and to unfold the implications of His preeminence in all things. To serve this end we seek to appropriate the mind of Christ as the biblical perspective from which we characterize and respond to reality. In attempting to make such a biblically grounded frame of reference explicit and operative, we are committed to excellence in academic inquiry, and we seek to define all areas of the college's structure and program according to this understanding of our purpose. /p>
Facilities
Covenant College has one of the most beautiful soccer-specific facilities in the southeast. New Scotland Yard has hosted regional and conference tournaments as well as Covenant's annual homecoming game. The 120 x 75 yard Bermuda field has covered benches, a video tower, scoreboard, and stadium seating for 1,000. Covenant has two practice fields as well as Ashe Gymnasium (built in 2000) that has three basketball courts, weight rooms, the athletic training room, locker rooms, and classrooms.
A Great College Soccer Experience
The excitement that surrounds our program on campus, a strong team chemistry, and an expectation for an advanced level of play give our players a fantastic college soccer experience. Training sessions are designed to challenge our player's fitness, technical, and tactical levels. The coaching staff seeks to develop every player individually while improving the team collectively.
Program Philosophy...
Our goal is to be a nationally competitive program that is considered one of the best places to play college soccer in the country.
How it can be accomplished...
Development of and a focus on program core values and expectations...
There will be a focus and a priority placed on the program's core values. These values will allow the team to develop incredible chemistry by collectively striving to hold one another accountable to program standards. These expectations will challenge the team to constantly integrate their faith into their soccer experience and apply biblical principles to all aspects of their lives.
A Commitment to recruiting quality student-athletes who are a good institutional fit ...
Signing athletes who just come to school to play soccer will limit the program's ability to develop true biblical accountability and fellowship. We aim to attract fantastic students who are also talented athletes by offering an incredible college soccer experience and the opportunity to play for a distinctively Christian team.
Showcasing an attractive yet disciplined style of play...
Technical proficiency will be stressed in order to maintain a high level of tactical discipline and charisma. An understanding of the team's collective strengths and weaknesses will determine our system of play. A clear grasp of zonal defending principles coupled with an expectation for dynamic attacking movements will make the team fun to watch. How this is done...
- - Small-sided games that teach fundamental defending and attacking tactics will be the backbone of the training program. This will allow a natural progression from clarity in the small-sided games to the reality of the full-sided match. An emphasis on disciplined defending and transition to goal with quick ball circulation will be the cornerstone of our style of play.
- - Possession activities in small areas will challenge the players to be technically precise and mentally quick. Each possession activity will typically have a condition or a direction in order to stress penetration. (Good teams possess the ball well. Great teams penetrate the opposition's defense while maintaining possession.)
- - Positional understanding will be taught by organized functional training and film sessions that will allow the player to fully understand his role in our system.
- - Shadow play will allow the players to see the quick yet dynamic movements necessary to break down the opposition while maintaining the integrity of the team's shape.
